Sachin Tendulkar Lauds Shubman Gill After Record-Breaking Century

On the first day of the second Test at Edgbaston, Yashasvi Jaiswal gave India a powerful start with his confident strokeplay despite early pressure. After KL Rahul was dismissed early, Jaiswal handled England’s bowling with poise, especially during the testing first session where the ball was swinging under overcast skies.

Chris Woakes and the rest of the English attack struggled to break through, even though they generated movement and bounce. Jaiswal crafted a fluent 87 and was part of two important fifty-plus partnerships—one with Karun Nair and another with Shubman Gill. His aggressive and fearless intent earned high praise from cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, who posted on X, “@ybj_19 set the tone from ball one. He was positive, fearless and smartly aggressive.”

Gill Anchors After Collapse

India made three changes to their squad from the Leeds Test to strengthen their batting, and it paid off. Shubman Gill, leading the side, showcased maturity and control after a short collapse in the evening. He remained unbeaten on 114 at stumps and shared a valuable 99-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja, who was not out on 41.

Sachin Tendulkar also applauded Gill’s composure, writing, “@ShubmanGill was cool as ever, calm under pressure, solid in defence and in total control. Classy knocks from both. Well played, boys!” Even England’s Chris Woakes admitted Gill’s dominance, saying, “It felt like we were close to getting him lbw where he got a little inside edge. Other than those it felt like he was in control of pretty much everything. Credit to him. He played very well. It is a very good hundred and a big one for his team.”

Mutual Admiration and Team Spirit

After play, Jaiswal praised Gill’s leadership and batting, calling it inspiring. “I think he has been amazing the way he has been batting. It’s just incredible to see him bat and as a captain also, he has been amazing and I think he is very clear in his head what he needs to do with the team and we are very confident in what we are going to do,” Jaiswal said.

He also emphasized the team’s mindset, saying, “We all are enjoying batting, and the idea is for the one who is set to take the game deep. We are all in the same mindset.” This solid team approach and individual brilliance helped India finish strongly at 310/5 on Day 1.
