Despite stepping away from international cricket in 2020, Dhoni has continued to remain in the limelight through his appearances at public events. His participation in the IPL also ensures packed stadiums, with fans flocking in huge numbers whenever he takes the field.
With the Ranchi-born legend not expected to feature in the IPL for many more seasons, supporters will be eager to catch a glimpse of the iconic cricketer in the 2026 edition.
“MS Dhoni Will Move On at Some Point”- Stephen Fleming
During the IPL 2026 auction, Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming spoke about the signing of Sanju Samson, indicating that the franchise views him as a potential long-term successor to MS Dhoni. The former New Zealand skipper said, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo:
“The opportunity was there. We felt we were still a little bit light in our opening batting. And we were also looking at [the fact that] at some point MS Dhoni will move on. Sanju is an international-quality player and he fills that role very well, so succession planning.”
“And just opportunity really, just again looking at refreshing and seeing what Chennai will look like in six years’ time, not two years’ time. And just making sure that there’s a succession [plan] around the players we are introducing.”
