Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has shared his views on how Rohit Sharma taking over the reins in the 50-over format will impact Team India going forward. The BCCI, however, has announced yesterday that Rohit Sharma has been named the ODI captain of the team.

As per the reports, the board has asked Virat Kohli to voluntarily step down as the ODI captain within 48 hours. However, he did not respond, which led to the BCCI sacking him and appointing Rohit as the new captain of the team as well.

And, the upcoming series against South Africa will be Rohit’s first assignment as India’s full-time white-ball captain. Saying on the decision made by the board, Salman Butt said on his YouTube channel:

“Rohit Sharma is no longer the stand-in captain, where he has the pressure only for one match or one tournament. People will talk about him now. For a change now, whatever good or bad happens, people will attach it with Rohit Sharma’s name and not Virat Kohli. So it is a different feel altogether.”

Rohit Sharma has led Team India in 10 ODIs to date, where they have emerged winners eight times. Even, India won the Asia Cup under Rohit’s captaincy in 2018.

Salman Butt again replied: “These players (Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli) are so seasoned, so experienced now that I can expect them to handle themselves well in ups and downs. It remains to be seen how Rohit Sharma does it because he is the permanent captain now.”

Although India failed to win an ICC trophy under Virat Kohli’s leadership, the team did exceptionally well across formats.

Rohit Sharma’s first assignment as full-time ODI captain will be when India tour South Africa for a three-match series later this month.
