Sam Curran, the talented England all-rounder, has been appointed captain of Surrey’s men’s team for the upcoming 2025 Vitality T20 Blast. This new leadership role provides Curran with an opportunity to showcase his captaincy skills, potentially making him a strong contender for England’s white-ball captaincy in the future. His appointment comes after Jos Buttler stepped down as England’s white-ball captain, leaving a vacancy that Curran could fill if he proves his leadership capabilities.
Having been with Surrey since his U15 days, Curran has a deep connection with the club. His leadership experience includes captaining Surrey at the U17 level, briefly leading them in the 2023 Vitality Blast, and managing teams in franchise cricket, such as the Punjab Kings in the IPL and the Desert Vipers in ILT20 2025. Under his captaincy, the Desert Vipers reached the ILT20 final, further solidifying his credentials as a leader.
Curran Expresses Pride in New Leadership Role
Following his appointment, Curran expressed his excitement and gratitude for the opportunity to lead Surrey. He emphasized his commitment to bringing success to the team and continuing the club’s legacy of excellence.
“I am deeply honored and proud to have been appointed Surrey’s T20 captain,” Curran stated. “Leading such a talented group of players at this iconic club is a privilege. I look forward to the challenge and will do everything I can to uphold the standards and expectations Surrey prides itself on.”
Curran is determined to replicate Surrey’s recent County Championship successes in the T20 format, aiming to deliver trophies and make the club’s members and fans proud. His leadership will be crucial in shaping Surrey’s campaign in the 2025 Vitality Blast.
A Key Player in England’s White-Ball Cricket
Despite being named England’s Player of the Tournament in the 2022 T20 World Cup, Curran has struggled to secure a consistent spot in England’s white-ball squads. He was not included in recent series, including the 2025 Champions Trophy. However, his impressive T20 record speaks for itself.
Across 268 T20 matches, he has scored over 4,000 runs at a strike rate of 135.15, including 24 half-centuries and a century in the previous year’s Blast. With the ball, he has claimed 254 wickets at an economy of 8.80, with four five-wicket hauls.
Surrey’s High-Performance Cricket Advisor, Alec Stewart, believes this is the right time for Curran to step into the leadership role. Thanking former T20 captain Chris Jordan for his contributions, Stewart emphasized that Curran’s experience in Surrey and franchise cricket makes him well-suited for the job. With Curran at the helm, Surrey aims to go one step further in their quest for silverware.
