Sanju Samson Opens Up On His Admiration For MS Dhoni

MS Dhoni

As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 approaches, Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson shared his deep admiration for former India and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni. Like many young cricketers, Samson always looked up to Dhoni and cherished every opportunity to interact with him. Reflecting on his experiences, Samson recalled how, during every match against CSK, he would seek a chance to converse with Dhoni and learn from his insights.

One of his fondest memories includes a match against CSK in Sharjah, where he delivered a strong performance, scoring between 70-80 runs and earning the Man of the Match award. Following that game, he finally had an in-depth conversation with Dhoni, beginning a lasting bond.

Over the years, their relationship has strengthened, with Samson frequently meeting Dhoni at various events and shoots. Speaking on JioHotstar’s ‘SuperStar’ programme, he expressed how surreal it feels to go from idolizing Dhoni to now sharing personal moments with him.

MS Dhoni’s Retention and Role in IPL 2025

Ahead of the 2025 season, CSK retained Dhoni under the uncapped category for ₹4 crore. This was possible due to a rule introduced before the previous IPL auction, which allows franchises to retain players who haven’t played international cricket in the last five years. Since retiring from international cricket in 2020, Dhoni has only been active in the IPL, continuing to play a crucial role for CSK.

During the 2024 IPL season, Dhoni demonstrated his finishing skills, scoring 161 runs at a remarkable strike rate of 220 and an average of 53.66. He remained unbeaten in eight out of 11 innings, proving to be a vital asset for CSK. As he gears up for the 2025 season, Dhoni will be chasing his sixth IPL title, with Ruturaj Gaikwad leading the team. CSK will begin their campaign against their long-time rivals, Mumbai Indians, at their home ground, Chepauk.

Dhoni’s IPL Legacy

Dhoni’s impact in the IPL has been monumental. He is currently the sixth-highest run-scorer in tournament history, with 5,243 runs in 264 matches at an average of 39.12 and a strike rate of 137.53. He has recorded 24 half-centuries, with his highest score being an unbeaten 84.

Although he is synonymous with CSK, Dhoni also played for the now-defunct Rising Pune Supergiant (RPG) in the 2016-17 seasons. His consistency and leadership have made him an IPL legend, and as he enters another season, fans eagerly anticipate more memorable performances from the veteran cricketer.
