The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) secured a clinical 8-wicket victory over the Delhi Capitals (DC) in Match 48 of IPL 2026 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday, May 5. Guided by a sublime unbeaten half-century from Sanju Samson, CSK completed a season double over the home side, successfully chasing down a target of 156 with 15 balls to spare.

This win bolsters Chennai’s playoff ambitions while significantly denting Delhi’s chances. Earlier, Delhi Capitals won the toss and elected to bat first on a surface that appeared to favor spin. The innings struggled for momentum as the CSK bowlers, led by Noor Ahmad (2/22) and Akeal Hosein (1/19), kept tight control.

DC found themselves in deep trouble at 69/5 following a middle-order collapse. However, Tristan Stubbs and Sameer Rizvi staged a vital rescue act. Stubbs scored 38 off 31 balls, while Rizvi played a blistering unbeaten cameo of 40 off 24 deliveries*, including four towering sixes. Their 65-run partnership propelled Delhi to a competitive, albeit below-par, total of 155/7.

Samson’s 87* powers Chennai as unbeaten 111-run stand seals dominant chase

Chennai’s chase began with an early setback as Ruturaj Gaikwad (6) was dismissed cheaply by Axar Patel. Urvil Patel briefly ignited the innings with 17 off 9 balls before falling to Lungi Ngidi. However, the game shifted decisively in Chennai’s favor once Sanju Samson found his rhythm.

Samson played an innings of pure authority, smashing 87 off 52 balls*, featuring seven boundaries and six sixes. He was perfectly supported by Kartik Sharma, who contributed a steady 41 off 31 balls*. The duo shared an unbeaten 111-run stand for the third wicket, dismantling the DC bowling attack with surgical precision.

Despite the efforts of the Delhi bowlers, including a disciplined spell from Mitchell Starc (0/30), they were unable to break the partnership. CSK reached the target comfortably in 17.3 overs, finishing at 159/2. Sanju Samson was rightfully named Player of the Match for his match-winning performance.

With this result, CSK moves to 10 points on the table, while Delhi Capitals slump to their fourth defeat in five games.
