The Test team for India’s upcoming tour of the West Indies was announced recently and Sarfaraz Khan once again failed to make it to the cut. A top contender for a spot in India’s Test squad, Sarfaraz has proven himself through strong showings in the domestic circuit.
In the 2022–23 Ranji Trophy season, Sarfaraz amassed 556 runs in six games at an average of 92.66 including three centuries. He had 982 runs for an average of 122.75 during the 2021–22 Ranji Trophy season as well. But he failed to seal a place in the squad and youngsters Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ruturaj Gaikwad have been added.
After being omitted from the West Indies Test series, Sarfaraz Khan posts a story on Instagram
Meanwhile, experts expressed strong disagreement with the choice, and Sarfaraz’s Instagram story has gained widespread traction. However, a photo of the batting nets with the caption “One Love” was posted by Sarfaraz Khan. The post also had the theme song from the film “Lakshya” playing in the background.
However, legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar expressed his disappointment following the announcement of the Test squad. He claimed that these choices may demoralize young players, who will start considering franchise-based leagues as their only chance to play for their country.
“Over the last three seasons, Sarfaraz Khan has scored 100 points on average. He might not be in the XI, but you pick him in the team. What must he do to be chosen? Tell him that his efforts are being appreciated. Otherwise, you should stop watching Ranji Trophy. You just play IPL and think you are good enough for the red ball game as well, so it’s pointless, you say,” he added.
