Sarfaraz Khan’s Majestic 161 Puts India ‘A’ In Control Against England Lions

Mumbai’s prolific batsman, Sarfaraz Khan, sent a resounding message to the national selection committee, producing a stellar innings of 161 that propelled India A into a commanding position against England Lions. This remarkable feat came just 48 hours after enduring another snub from the selectors. The second ‘unofficial Test’ in Ahmedabad witnessed India A dominating proceedings, having dismissed England for 152 on day one.

Starting day two at 150 for no loss, India A capitalized on favorable conditions, amassing a formidable total of 489, securing a substantial 337-run first-innings lead. The opening partnership between Abhimanyu Easwaran (58) and Devdutt Padikkal (105) laid the groundwork, but it was Sarfaraz Khan who stole the show. Exploiting the favorable batting conditions, he plundered runs from the Lions’ spinners, leaving them grappling with his relentless assault.

Despite being overlooked for Virat Kohli’s replacement by Rajat Patidar in the Tests against England, Sarfaraz let his bat eloquently express his disappointment. The Narendra Modi Stadium ‘Ground A’ witnessed a masterclass in facing spin, with Sarfaraz dispatching five sixes, three off left-arm spinner Callum Parkinson and two off-spinner Oliver Price. His aggressive approach included repeated use of his feet and adept inside-out drives.

Special attention was reserved for England’s key bowler, Matthew Potts (6/125), as Sarfaraz unleashed an array of boundaries, particularly targeting the cover and extra cover region. The batsman’s partnership prowess shone through as he contributed significantly to stands of 169 for the sixth wicket with Washington Sundar (57) and 96 for the seventh wicket with spinner Saurabh Kumar (77).

Sarfaraz’s batting spectacle not only bolstered his credentials but also kept him firmly in contention for a Test spot. The uncertainty of injuries during the series leaves him as a prime candidate for selection, particularly if Shreyas Iyer faces challenges in finding form. In a cricketing saga that unfolded at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Sarfaraz Khan emerged as the protagonist, making a compelling case for national recognition with his scintillating innings against England Lions.
