Shakib Al Hasan, the prominent all-rounder of the Bangladesh National Cricket Team, is currently grappling with significant legal issues as a Dhaka court has ordered the seizure of his assets. This decision comes in the wake of a fraud case involving bounced cheques totaling over $300,000.
The court’s ruling has intensified the scrutiny surrounding Shakib, particularly due to his past association with the ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Once a member of Parliament under Hasina’s administration, Shakib has found himself at the center of public outrage following a student-led uprising that led to the government’s downfall last year.
Political Fallout and Public Outrage
The political climate in Bangladesh has turned hostile for Shakib, who has been linked to allegations regarding a violent crackdown on demonstrators during the protests. Although he has managed to evade formal charges related to these allegations, he is now facing serious fraud charges.
The recent asset seizure order, issued by a Dhaka magistrate, adds to the mounting pressure on the cricketer, especially after an arrest warrant was issued earlier this year. While specific details about the properties to be seized remain undisclosed, the legal troubles are escalating, and Shakib has not returned to Bangladesh since the political upheaval, having been in Canada for a domestic T20 league.
Career in Crisis Amid Legal and Performance Issues
Shakib Al Hasan is one of Bangladesh’s most celebrated cricketers, with an impressive record that includes 71 Tests, 247 ODIs, and 129 T20Is, during which he has taken 712 wickets and scored over 14,500 runs. However, his career is now facing uncertainty due to ongoing legal battles and his recent exclusion from the ODI squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Shakib has expressed frustration over this exclusion, attributing it to a lack of clear communication with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). His challenges began in September 2024 when his bowling action was reported during a County Championship match, leading to a ban after an independent assessment deemed his action illegal.
Despite multiple attempts to rectify his bowling technique, Shakib faced setbacks but ultimately passed the necessary evaluations, regaining eligibility to bowl. He has voiced his desire for better communication with the BCB, stating, “I don’t have any complaints, but if the communication was better in that case, I would have been happier.”
