Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has expressed his intention to conclude his international cricket career following the 2025 Champions Trophy. He also revealed his plan to retire from all forms of international cricket after the 2023 Champions Trophy and to retire from T20s after the upcoming World Cup in the West Indies and the United States.
Shakib made a statement: “As far as international career is concerned, what I see at this moment it is up to 2025 Champions Trophy that is the ODI format. The T20 format is up to 2024 World Cup and that’s it. As far as Test goes, may be sooner, maybe after the World Cup,” Shakib was quoted as saying in an exclusive interview with T-Sports.”
“May be I will retire from three formats at the same time and no one can tell about future but at this moment I have such an idea,”
Furthermore, Shakib made it clear that he will step down as the captain of the Bangladeshi national team in ODIs after the World Cup in India.
In the earlier part of the year, Shakib resumed his role as the captain of Bangladesh’s ODI team when Tamim Iqbal relinquished the position ahead of the Asia Cup. He mentioned that he took on the captaincy again at the request of BCB chief Najmul Hasan Papon.
“As far as reality goes, I will lead till this World Cup and I won’t lead in ODIs after that. Let me clear one thing – I resigned as captain on [September] 17th, and when I did that, I did not know that this kind of situation was coming up.”
“Papon (Nazmul) bhai and team management said that they need me as captain. Not for me, but for the team, and I agreed,”
Bangladesh is set to face Afghanistan in the opening match of the World Cup on Saturday, October 7th, at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) Stadium in Dharamsala.
