“Shakib’s Security Is Not In The Board’s Hand” – BCB Chief Faruque Ahmed Addressing The All-Rounder’s Off-Field Issues

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Faruque Ahmed has stated that he won’t be responsible for ensuring security for Shakib Al Hasan during his potential final Test at home. He emphasized that security arrangements should be managed by higher government authorities.

In the course of the recent anti government agitation in the country, the Adabor police station accused the 37-year-old out figher alongside one hundred and forty seven others of murder. In spite of the setback, BCB consented to allow the southpaw represent the nation while assuring that he will not be subjected to any form of harassment.

Addressing the media in Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Thursday, Ahmed said that the board does not have the capacity to secure any particular person as the individual in this case, is concerned, that is the duty of the government. He is quoted by Cricbuzz as saying:

“Shakib’s security is not in the board’s hand. The board can’t provide an individual with personal security. He has to take a decision on that. His security has to come from the highest level of the government. BCB is not a security agency like the police or RAB (Rapid Action Battalion). The security issue needs to be cleared by the government because from the board we cannot say anything.”

On Thursday, the seasoned cricketer had declared his retirement from T20 international matches and also showed his desire to play his last Test match in the home series against South Africa in October. However, Cricket South Africa (CSA) has still not cleared the tour.

“Shakib is facing a difficult period”- Faruque Ahmed

Ahmed noted that they honor the 37-year-old’s desire to play his final Test at home, considering the challenging period he is experiencing.

“Shakib is going through a tough time personally so we cannot say much from our side. Like him even I think if he can play his last Test from here, there cannot be anything better than that but his security issues need to be assured by the higher authorities. He is going through a tough time. He felt this is the right time for him to play his last Test and we have showed respect to his decision.”

The ex-skipper will play in the second Test match against India, which is scheduled to be held in Kanpur from September 27. If he cannot play for Bangladesh in the Test series against South Africa, this might be his final appearance in the longest format.
