Shreyas Iyer has solidified his reputation as a dependable white-ball cricketer, following a standout IPL 2025 campaign with the Punjab Kings. Although he won the IPL title with Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, doubts lingered about his leadership, with many attributing the tactical decisions to Gautam Gambhir.
This year, however, Iyer’s solo leadership efforts have silenced critics and elevated his standing in the eyes of selectors. His calm demeanour, strategic decision-making, and consistent performances have reportedly earned him a place in the discussion for India’s next white-ball captain.
India’s Leadership Conundrum
The current structure of India’s national teams sees Shubman Gill in charge of Tests, Rohit Sharma leading the ODIs, and Suryakumar Yadav heading the T20I squad. But this fragmented leadership model is viewed as temporary.
Experts believe the setup isn’t viable long-term and that Indian cricket is moving toward having one captain each for white-ball and red-ball formats. As the ODI format awaits a new leader in the near future, the inconsistency of Suryakumar Yadav in ODIs weakens his chances of taking on that role, despite his T20I credentials.
Shreyas Iyer’s Growing Influence
With questions surrounding Suryakumar’s ODI place, Iyer’s credibility has grown. His IPL success this season not only reestablished him as a capable leader but also opened doors across all three formats. “Right now he just plays ODIs, but after this IPL we can’t keep him out of T20 internationals and even Tests.”
He continued, “Plus, he has also now officially joined the white-ball captaincy race,” stated a key decision-maker. Rohit Sharma’s uncertain timeline for retirement from ODIs adds to the speculation. Having already stepped away from T20Is and Tests, it’s unclear when Rohit will step aside in the 50-over format. When that moment comes, Iyer is expected to be among the top names in contention.
Given Shreyas Iyer’s age, experience, and leadership growth, he appears to be a natural successor in the white-ball setup. At 30, he is in the prime of his cricketing career and has already led IPL franchises with varying levels of success and scrutiny.
His ability to handle pressure, guide younger players, and adapt to game situations makes him a well-rounded candidate. As Indian cricket looks to transition into a new era post-Rohit Sharma, having a captain like Iyer, who brings both maturity and aggression, could provide the stability and direction the team needs in limited-overs formats.
