India’s middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand, as he continues his recovery from a serious injury sustained last year. The right-hander, who also serves as India’s ODI vice-captain, has not yet received full medical clearance to return to competitive cricket.

Although there were early hopes that Iyer could regain match fitness in time, the team management and medical staff have decided not to rush his comeback, prioritising long-term health over immediate availability.

Injury, Weight Loss, and Rehabilitation Challenges

Iyer suffered a spleen injury during India’s ODI series against Australia in October, an incident that forced him out of action for an extended period. While his rehabilitation has progressed steadily, a major concern remains his significant weight loss during recovery. Reports suggest that the batter lost close to six kilograms, primarily due to reduced muscle mass, which has affected his overall strength and conditioning.

Although he has resumed batting practice, fielding for long durations in a 50-over match continues to be a challenge. The injury has limited his ability to meet the physical demands required at international level, especially in a format where endurance and agility play a crucial role.

BCCI Takes Cautious Approach on Return Timeline

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has adopted a cautious stance regarding Iyer’s return, making it clear that he will only be cleared once he passes all fitness benchmarks. There were discussions about him featuring in a couple of domestic Vijay Hazare Trophy matches for Mumbai to assess his readiness, but even that plan remains uncertain. Selection decisions will ultimately depend on how well he responds to further fitness evaluations and whether he can cope with the physical intensity of a full match.

With major international tournaments lined up later in the year, the Indian team management is keen to ensure that Iyer returns fully fit rather than risking a premature comeback. For now, his absence opens opportunities for other middle-order batters, while Iyer focuses on regaining strength and match sharpness before making his return to the national side.
