Shubman Gill made a memorable debut in the Boxing-Day Test match in Melbourne as he became the third-highest run-scorer on Test debut in Australia. He started the day on 28 and went onto score 43 runs in his debut innings. Shubman Gill looked certain and assertive with his technique. After weathering the early storm from the Australian bowlers he struck five boundaries in his 28. Ajit Agarkar hailed the maturity of the 21-year old in the post-match show with Sony Sports Network.

Shubman Gill came in as a replacement for Prithvi Shaw who fared poorly in the first test in Adelaide. Shaw scored a duck and 4 in the two innings of the first test match. Meanwhile, Gill impressed one and all with his debut. He scored hose runs in 65 deliveries. Gill played an aggressive brand of cricket as he kept the scoreboard moving.

The early wicket of Mayank Agarwal did not have any impact on Gill’s concentration as he batted with immense focus. Agarkar lauded the newcomer’s self-belief and stated that the young Indian opener will make it count on the second day of the game as well.

He did exactly the same as he weathered the storm of the Australian bowlers going onto his debut score of 43. Gill had two good scores in the practice games, which paved his path to his Test debut. Gill returning unbeaten overnight would have done his confidence a world of good.

Mayank Agarwal holds the best score for an Indian batsman who mae his debut in Australia. Making his Test debut at the MCG in 2018, He scored 76. Dattu Phadkar, who had scored 51 runs on his debut in Sydney, back in December 1947 is second on the list

Gill was dropped twice once on 5 by Marnus Labuschagne and once on 28 by Aussie skipper Tim Paine. However, Gill fell short of a fifty on debut as Pat Cummins gave Australia the first breakthrough on Day 2 at the MCG.
