India received a major boost ahead of the upcoming Asia Cup as several frontline players, including Test captain Shubman Gill and pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah, cleared their mandatory pre-season fitness tests at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Gill, who was recently appointed vice-captain for the T20 Asia Cup starting September 9 in Dubai, had missed the Duleep Trophy after being sidelined with a fever.
His successful completion of the assessments ensures he will be available to lead from the front in the continental tournament. Along with Gill, wicketkeeper-batter Jitesh Sharma also cleared the evaluations, confirming his readiness for selection.
Comprehensive Testing and Player Updates
The fitness camp was not restricted to the usual Yo-Yo endurance drill; it also included a DXA scan to measure bone density and overall physical health. Apart from Gill, Bumrah, and Jitesh, players such as Mohammed Siraj, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Washington Sundar, and Shardul Thakur were put through the process.
Encouragingly, all of them passed without concerns. Jaiswal and Sundar remain on the standby list for the Asia Cup, while Thakur will stay in India to captain the West Zone team in the Duleep Trophy semifinal against Central Zone beginning September 4.
Meanwhile, senior batter Rohit Sharma, who has stepped away from Test and T20 cricket, may still play limited-overs fixtures later this year. There is speculation that he could feature in India A’s one-day series against Australia A in Kanpur at the end of September, followed by a potential ODI tour of Australia in November. For now, Rohit is expected to continue training at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
Other Squad Members and Injury Concerns
Several other members of the Asia Cup squad, including Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav, and standby player Riyan Parag, were unavailable for the centralized testing as they were busy representing their zonal teams in the Duleep Trophy quarterfinals. Since they were in active competition, separate fitness evaluations were deemed unnecessary at this stage.
However, Dhruv Jurel, another standby wicketkeeper-batter, remains under medical observation. He had to withdraw from the Duleep Trophy due to a groin issue, which also led to Rajat Patidar stepping in as captain of the Central Zone. His recovery will be closely monitored in the lead-up to the Asia Cup.
Overall, the smooth fitness clearance of key names like Gill and Bumrah is a positive development for India, ensuring that the squad enters the Asia Cup with momentum and minimal injury setbacks.
