Shubman Gill Eyes Historic Feat in 2nd ODI Against England

Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill, the 25-year-old right-handed batter delivered a stunning performance in the first ODI against England at Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) Stadium in Nagpur on February 6. His impressive 87-run knock off 96 balls, laced with 14 boundaries, helped India chase down 249 runs successfully. His outstanding innings earned him the Player of the Match award.

As India heads into the second ODI at Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on February 9, Gill has a golden opportunity to etch his name into the history books. With just 85 more runs, he can become the fastest batter to reach 2500 runs in ODIs, surpassing the current record held by South African great Hashim Amla.

Shubman Gill’s Dominance in ODIs

Gill made his ODI debut for India on January 31, 2019, against New Zealand in Hamilton. Since then, he has taken giant strides, cementing his place in the Indian batting lineup. His ability to anchor an innings while accelerating when needed has made him a key asset for Team India.

Shubman Gill boasts an impressive ODI record with 2,415 runs in 48 matches, including 5 hundreds and 14 fifties, and holds the distinction of being the first batter to achieve 20 fifty-plus scores in ODIs in less than 50 innings, showcasing his remarkable consistency.

The Historic Feat in Sight

If Gill scores at least 85 runs in the second ODI, he will become the fastest batter to reach 2500 ODI runs in less than 50 matches. Currently, Hashim Amla holds the record, having reached the milestone in 53 matches. Breaking this record would further establish Gill’s reputation as a modern-day ODI maestro. While Gill is eyeing a record, other Indian players also have the chance to achieve personal milestones in the upcoming match.

Shreyas Iyer, with 2,480 runs in 63 ODIs and an average of 47.69, needs just 20 more runs in the second ODI to reach the 2,500-run milestone, after his explosive 59 off 36 balls in the first match.

Virat Kohli’s Quest for 14,000 ODI Runs

Virat Kohli, one of the greatest batters of all time, is just 94 runs away from becoming the fastest batter to score 14,000 runs in ODIs. Given his impeccable record against England and his ability to rise to the occasion, Kohli will be eager to achieve this landmark in the second ODI.

Rohit Sharma’s Milestone Moment

Indian captain Rohit Sharma needs just 22 runs to surpass Rahul Dravid on the list of India’s highest run-scorers in ODIs. With his aggressive batting style and leadership skills, Rohit will look to make an impact and guide India to another victory. With multiple records and milestones on the line, the second ODI promises to be a thrilling contest.
