Shubman Gill has provided an important update on Indian pacer Akash Deep ahead of the fourth Test against England, scheduled to begin on Wednesday, July 23, at Old Trafford in Manchester. Speaking at the pre-match press conference, Gill confirmed that Akash Deep will not be available for selection for the upcoming Test.
The fast bowler had suffered a groin issue during the third Test, putting his participation in doubt. His absence adds to India’s growing injury concerns, with Nitish Kumar Reddy already ruled out for the rest of the series.
“It’s never easy when there are a few injuries in the squad. Nitish Kumar Reddy is going to miss out on the series. Akash Deep is unavailable for the next match, so is Arshdeep, but we have enough good players in the team to pick up twenty wickets.”
”That has been the most challenging aspect of the series. It is not ideal to have different bowlers, but I was prepared,” Gill was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
Shubman Gill Eyes Strong Comeback With The Bat
Shubman Gill has been in outstanding batting form throughout the ongoing series. The right-handed batter has amassed 607 runs in three Tests at an impressive average of 101.16, including three centuries. However, in the third Test, Gill couldn’t replicate that form, scoring just 16 in the first innings and 6 in the second.
India suffered a narrow 22-run defeat in that match and now trail the series 1-2. With only two Tests remaining, the upcoming clash in Manchester is crucial for the visitors as they aim to level the series and stay in contention for a win. For that to happen, Gill will need to rise to the occasion and deliver with the bat.
The Indian captain will be eager to put his poor performance at Lord’s behind him and get back to scoring runs at Old Trafford.
