Team India’s star batter Shubman Gill is likely to miss the 2025 Duleep Trophy owing to illness, just weeks before the Asia Cup. Gill was scheduled to captain North Zone in the tournament after his successful outing in England during the 2025 Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.
As per a Cricbuzz report, Gill is currently under rest, and the physios have already submitted a health update to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) after an initial assessment. The North Zone selection panel does not expect him to take part in the competition and is waiting for an official confirmation before deciding the next steps.
Meanwhile, a report by Dainik Jagran suggests that Gill’s health concerns are unlikely to affect his availability for the upcoming Asia Cup. Shubman Gill’s participation in the domestic tournament had already been uncertain after his inclusion in Team India’s 2025 Asia Cup squad.
The Duleep Trophy is set to start on August 28 and will continue into the second week of September, with North Zone facing East Zone in the quarter-finals of the revamped format in Bengaluru. As anticipated, Shubham Rohilla has been named as Gill’s replacement, while vice-captain Ankit Kumar is expected to take over the leadership duties.
Meanwhile, the Asia Cup is scheduled to begin on September 9 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), with the team likely departing in the first week of September to prepare for the short-format tournament.
Shubman Gill Appointed Vice-Captain Of India’s 2025 Asia Cup Squad
Gill’s impressive performances in the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL), along with a strong start to his leadership journey in England, earned him a place back in the T20I squad despite fierce competition for opening positions.
He regained the vice-captaincy from Axar Patel ahead of the 2025 Asia Cup and secured his spot in the main squad, ahead of contenders like Yashasvi Jaiswal. Team India will begin their 2025 Asia Cup campaign with a Group A match against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on September 10.
