Shubman Gill’s Struggles Continue With 14-Run Dismissal In Ranji Trophy

Team India’s star batter Shubman Gill endured another disappointing outing as he was dismissed for 14 off 32 balls in the second innings of Punjab’s 2025–26 Ranji Trophy group-stage match against Saurashtra. As in the first innings, the Test captain was adjudged LBW to left-arm spinner Parth Bhut during the contest in Rajkot on Friday, January 23.

After registering a duck while batting at No. 5 in the first innings, Gill promoted himself to No. 4 for Punjab’s challenging run chase. Set a daunting 320-run target on a sharply turning surface, the skipper looked to steady the innings alongside former India Under-19 captain Uday Saharan.

Shubman Gill managed just one boundary before falling in the 21st over, failing to capitalise on his start. His dismissal left Punjab struggling at 78 for 3, further highlighting their ongoing struggles in the Ranji Trophy.

Coming into the match, Punjab were placed sixth in Group B, having drawn their opening three fixtures before suffering a heavy innings-and-92-run defeat against Maharashtra prior to the break.

Shubman Gill records 21.77 average in the last 10 innings across formats

The right-handed batter has endured a difficult phase over the past few months, with his form continuing to dip. A below-par start to his ODI captaincy stint, recurring injury setbacks, and subsequent exclusion from India’s T20 World Cup squad have all contributed to Gill’s struggle to rediscover his best touch.

Across his last ten innings—spanning the T20I series against South Africa, the recently concluded ODIs versus New Zealand, and his appearances for Punjab—Gill has managed just 196 runs. Apart from back-to-back half-centuries against the Blackcaps, there has been little to highlight in terms of consistent returns.

Uncertainty also surrounds his availability for Punjab’s final group-stage fixture against table-toppers Karnataka, which is set to get underway on January 29.
