Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly recently shared his views on India’s transition after the retirements of two major players, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, from Test cricket.
Despite their sudden exits, Ganguly revealed he wasn’t overly concerned. He explained that Indian cricket is strong enough to continue thriving because of the young talent coming up through the ranks.
“There will be someone…” he said, emphasizing that new stars will rise to replace the old guard. Sourav Ganguly pointed out that such transitions are a natural part of cricket, and India has always managed to move forward after legends stepped away.
Ganguly Applauds Jaiswal and Gill’s Remarkable Centuries
Ganguly was full of praise for Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill, who led India’s strong start in the first Test against England at Headingley, Leeds. Both batters struck brilliant centuries on the opening day, helping India post a solid score of 359/3 by the end of Day 1.
Ganguly expressed admiration for their performance under pressure in foreign conditions. He also highlighted Rishabh Pant’s contribution, who followed with his own century the next day, putting India in a powerful position early in the series. These performances, Ganguly noted, are a sign of the team’s readiness to move on from the Rohit-Kohli era.
Special Praise for Gill’s Footwork and Composure
Ganguly especially appreciated Shubman Gill’s technique and control at the crease. He mentioned the significant improvement in Gill’s footwork, particularly in overseas conditions, which has helped him play more confidently.
“I am so happy to see his feet (movement) away from home, there’s a massive improvement in that away from home. Shubman’s feet were fantastic, didn’t make a mistake,” Ganguly remarked.
His observation shows that Gill, as the new Test captain, is not just stepping into a leadership role but also setting an example through his performance. Ganguly’s comments make it clear that he believes the team’s future is in safe hands, with players like Gill and Jaiswal ready to carry Indian cricket forward.
