In a three-match ODI against Sri Lanka, Indian men’s head coach Gautam Gambhir is up against his first series defeat. With a 1-0 lead after winning the second ODI, Sri Lanka forced India to make a decision that would either win or lose.

The controversy surrounding the first ODI game, in which the ICC match officials skipped a Super Over to force a result out of the tied match, persisted as the proceedings moved closer to the final match of India’s white-ball tour of Sri Lanka. The tour included a T20I series in which the Suryakumar Yadav-led team easily defeated the Islanders 3-0.

Why was super over not utilized in SL vs IND first ODI?

The Super Over was an option based on the ICC’s December 2023 ODI playing regulations, an SLC official told Midday. He continued by saying that the MOUs that SLC and BCCI had both signed included a reference to the playing conditions.

According to the Super Over rules, a tie will only be declared after the game if circumstances prevent a Super Over from occurring. A tied match must have a Super Over to determine its outcome.

Following the most recent amendment to the ICC Men’s ODI Playing Conditions, Clause 16.3.1.1, all ODI matches that conclude in ties shall be resolved by a Super Over, unless circumstances prohibit it from being played.

It says this:“If the team’s scores are equal after both innings have been completed then a Super Over shall be played. If the Super Over is a tie, then unless exceptional circumstances arise, subsequent Super Overs shall be played until there is a winner. Should it not be possible to play or complete the Super Overs needed to determine a winner, the match shall be tied.”

According to The Morning Telegraph, an ICC member has stated that if the third ODI between India and Sri Lanka is tied, the Super Over will be imposed. India are in a do-or-die position, about to suffer a series defeat.
