As Australia’s No.4, Smith became the fastest player to reach 32 Test hundreds, surpassing Ricky Ponting.
His century at Lord’s rekindled England’s nightmares of his dominant performance during the 2019 Ashes tour.
Despite his failures in the opening match, Smith’s triple-figure milestone on the second day of the series, which Australia leads 1-0, reminded everyone of his prowess.
Starting the day 15 runs away from his second century at Lord’s, Smith displayed his unconventional batting style by hitting a flurry of boundaries off the new ball. His milestone century was sealed with a cover drive off Jimmy Anderson.
Smith struggled in his second innings of the first Test. He scored only 16 runs from 59 balls before being dismissed lbw by Ben Stokes. He showed a more aggressive approach from the beginning of his innings at Lord’s.
Smith started with a boundary by pulling a delivery in front of square and followed it up with two cover-driven fours off Stuart Broad, quickly accumulating 24 runs from his first 15 deliveries.
