Kapil Dev became the first Indian skipper to lift the World Cup trophy. He was also the youngest skipper to achieve it at 24y 170d. Before the start of the tournament, the Indian team wasn’t given much of a chance by the experts. However, they got together as a unit to pull off one of the greatest world cup wins.
Let’s take a look at how cricketers and fans reacted:

On this day in 1983, we won the World Cup for the first time. I knew right then, that’s what I wanted to do too!”

This day marks the best and worst of times. 25 June 1983: glorious day for Indian cricket . June 25, 1975, dark day for Indian democracy. Today, cricket is booming, democracy is in recession. Our cricketers do us proud, our political class leaves us depressed. #Emergency #1983 pic.twitter.com/U9ffkdgvtp

West Indies couldn’t accept the fact that they has lost to us: Mohinder Amarnath on India’s 1983 World Cup triumph
Mohinder Amarnath was one of India’s key performers in the 1983 World Cup in England. He won the ‘Player of the Series award for scoring 237 runs and taking eight wickets in the tournament. Speaking about the reaction of the West Indies cricket team after losing the finals, Mohinder Amarnath expressed that they were disappointed. He stated to the TOI,
“They were very disappointed. We were fielding and we went straight into our dressing room. They never expected to lose to India, they never thought that we were good enough in One Day cricket – that was their mindset. They couldn’t accept the fact that they had lost to us in the final of the World Cup. That too a match played at the Lord’s, in front of a full house.”
