Former India cricketers Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag hailed the 1983 World Cup Indian team for scripting history and inspiring the youngsters to take up the sport. June 25, 2022 marks 39 years of the historic world cup triumph.

The Indian team defeated the mighty West Indies cricket team in the finals of the tournament. Batting first, India managed only 183 runs in the board. However, Mohinder Amarnath and Madan Lal scalped three wickets each in the second innings to power India to a World Cup title. They won the match by 43 runs at the Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Kapil Dev became the first Indian skipper to lift the World Cup trophy. He was also the youngest skipper to achieve it at 24y 170d. Before the start of the tournament, the Indian team wasn’t given much of a chance by the experts. However, they got together as a unit to pull off one of the greatest world cup wins.

Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar expressed that the world cup win inspired him to play for the Country and lift the title. He tweeted, Some moments in life inspire you & make you dream. On this day in 1983, we won the World Cup for the first time. I knew right then, that’s what I wanted to do too!”

Former India cricketer Virender Sehwag, wrote, “Date mein kya rakha hai? Well, 25th June, is date mein shuruaat rakhi hai. It is a day on which India began it’s journey-in 1932 playing it’s first ever Test & 51 years later on 25th June 1983, Kapil Paaji & his boys winning the World Cup, which was a beginning for many cricketers”

West Indies couldn’t accept the fact that they has lost to us: Mohinder Amarnath on India’s 1983 World Cup triumph

Mohinder Amarnath was one of India’s key performers in the 1983 World Cup in England. He won the ‘Player of the Series award for scoring 237 runs and taking eight wickets in the tournament. Speaking about the reaction of the West Indies cricket team after losing the finals, Mohinder Amarnath expressed that they were disappointed. He stated to the TOI,

“They were very disappointed. We were fielding and we went straight into our dressing room. They never expected to lose to India, they never thought that we were good enough in One Day cricket – that was their mindset. They couldn’t accept the fact that they had lost to us in the final of the World Cup. That too a match played at the Lord’s, in front of a full house.”
