Rishabh Pant acknowledged that India were outplayed in their two-match Test series against South Africa, conceding that the side struggled to meet expectations. India suffered a harsh 0–2 defeat at home, with the Proteas asserting control in both Kolkata and Guwahati. South Africa’s win in Kolkata marked their first Test victory on Indian soil since 2010, and they went on to secure the series with a commanding 408-run triumph in Guwahati—India’s heaviest home Test loss by runs. This series victory was only South Africa’s second-ever in India, following their 2000 2-0 sweep under Hansie Cronje.
Apology To Fans And Commitment To Regroup
In the aftermath of the defeat, criticism intensified around the players and the head coach. Responding to the disappointment expressed by fans, Rishabh Pant posted an apology on Instagram, sharing an image alongside a long message to supporters. Acknowledging the team’s shortcomings, he wrote, “There is no shying away from the fact that we didn’t play good enough cricket over the last two weeks. As a team and as individuals, we always want to perform at the highest level and bring smiles to billions of Indians. Sorry, we couldn’t live up to expectations this time, but sport teaches you to learn, adapt and grow – both as a team and as individuals.”
Emphasising the honour of wearing the Indian jersey and the belief in the squad’s potential, he added, “Representing India is the greatest honour of our lives. We know what this team is capable of, and we will work hard, regroup, refocus and reset to come back stronger and better as a team & individuals. Thank you for your unwavering support and love! Jai Hind.” His message served both as an apology and a promise to work toward a stronger resurgence.

Captaincy Pressure And Reflection After Series Loss
Pant captained the side in the second Test after Shubman Gill was sidelined with a neck injury. While certain strategic calls were appreciated, Pant also faced questions regarding his batting contributions and leadership decisions following the heavy defeat. Accepting responsibility during the post-match presentation in Guwahati, he expressed disappointment at the team’s inability to execute key moments.
Pant admitted, “It’s a little disappointing. As a team, we need to get better. Credit to the opposition — they dominated the series. We needed to be clear with our mindset. Cricket demands capitalising as a team, and we didn’t do that. That cost us the whole series.” His comments reinforced the sentiment that while mistakes were made, the team is determined to learn and return stronger in future contests.
