Former national captain Sourav Ganguly has praised Shreyas Iyer, saying that the player has improved considerably as a batter in the last 12 months, thus becoming the “most improved batter” in this period. Iyer’s match-winning innings was played before everyone during Punjab Kings’ (PBKS) 11-run win against Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on March 25.
Iyer’s match-winning knock of 97 not out came off just 42 balls and included five fours and nine sixes. His brilliant innings helped set a target of 244 runs for the Titans to chase. The Kings then restricted their opponents to 232 for five, leading to a thrilling victory.
“Shreyas Iyer ready to play all formats for India”- Sourav Ganguly
According to Ganguly, a former BCCI president, Iyer has improved quite a bit, and thus he is now fit to play for India in all three formats. Ganguly took to X and posted, “Shreyas Iyer the most improved batsman in last 1 yr…ready for all formats. Such good improvement to see after a couple of issues with his length.”
Though Iyer has been on and off in the ODI setup of India, he has had a few Test and T20I matches where he couldn’t secure his spot. His recent performance shows that he is putting effort into bettering the skills that will make him an adaptable batter.
Iyer’s fabulous form is quite evident in India’s Champions Trophy triumph, where he topped the run-scoring chart to help the Men in Blue clinch the title from New Zealand. With a consistent set of performances along with his technique of improvement, Iyer is claiming himself in a very long way to become a regular member of India’s team across all formats. Shreyas will look to extend his fine form when the Kings meet Rishabh Pant’s Lucknow Super Giants on April 1 at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow.
