Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly has provided his input regarding India’s search for a wicketkeeper-batsman for the upcoming Asia Cup and One Day International World Cup. Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly discussed India’s search for a wicketkeeper-batsman for the upcoming Asia Cup and ODI World Cup to be held in India.

In light of Rishabh Pant’s unavailability due to a recent car crash injury, the selection of a replacement has gained significant importance in Indian cricket. A highly regarded personality in Indian cricket, Ganguly conveyed his inclination towards Ishan Kishan as the preferred wicketkeeper-batsman. He highlighted Kishan’s dynamic batting approach as a pivotal consideration in this choice.

“Pant is the best wicketkeeper in the country, but you can see Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul (depending on his fitness); these two will be right up in Rohit’s and Rahul’s minds. I like Ishan Kishan because he just opens up the game for any team. I am sure Dravid will keep him in his plans,” Ganguly said during a recent event.

Aligned with his team’s strategy, Ganguly supported the idea of creating a well-rounded team comprising both seasoned players and emerging talents. He emphasized individuals such as Yashasvi Jaiswal, Tilak Varma, and Ishan Kishan, who, unaffected by previous disappointments, possess the ability to play bold and unreserved cricket.

Ganguly underlined the extensive array of choices at the disposal of head coach Rahul Dravid and the selectors, stressing the importance of pinpointing the optimal playing eleven as their primary objective.

“It has to be a team of experience and people who don’t have any scars — like Jaiswal, Varma, Ishan Kishan. They can go and play fearless cricket. Rahul (Dravid), Rohit and the selectors have plenty of choices; they just have to identify and pick the best XI,” Ganguly said.

Having maintained a strong performance history, Kishan has accumulated 694 runs with an outstanding average of 46.26 in 17 ODIs. It’s noteworthy that he has achieved a remarkable double century and six half-centuries. The choice carries significant weight, especially given India’s ambition to secure triumph on their home ground during the prominent tournament.

The upcoming prestigious events, the Asia Cup and the 2023 World Cup, are set to commence on August 30 and October 5, respectively.
