Sourav Ganguly Reveals His Intentions of Becoming India Head Coach

One of the finest captains to have led India, Sourav Ganguly has revealed that he aspires to be the Indian coach one day but not now. During a press meet, Ganguly said, “Definitely, I’m interested but not at this point of time. Let one more phase go then I will throw my name into the fray.”

The former Indian skipper is currently engaged with several other assignments. He is the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), a mentor of the Delhi Capitals in the IPL. Ganguly also does regular commentary. Under his mentorship, Delhi Capitals made it to the playoffs for the first time in the last 7 years.

“Currently, I’m associated with too many things – IPL, CAB, TV commentary. Let me complete this. But I will definitely put my hat at some stage, provided I get selected. But definitely, I am interested. Not now, but in the future,” Ganguly said.

Ganguly indirectly backed Ravi Shastri to continue as the head coach as he feels there aren’t enough big names in the fray. The Cricket Advisory Committee headed by Kapil Dev will select the head coach and there are as many as 6 names in the fray. However, Indian skipper, Virat Kohli didn’t shy away from revealing that he will definitely want Ravi Shastri to continue till the 2019 World Cup.

“Going by the applicants, I don’t see any heavyweight names. I heard Mahela Jayawardene would apply but ultimately he didn’t… There are not many big names who have applied for the coach’s job. Ultimately, I don’t know what the panel will decide. They have been around for a while. We will see how big the term they will give. Not many names who have applied. Whoever they feel is good they should do it,” he said.

“I will hold my opinion on that. I don’t think it’s right for me to say about that. I’m too far from the system that decides the coach,” Ganguly said.
