South Africa’s preparations for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 have been disrupted by a series of injury setbacks that have forced the national selectors to revise their originally announced squad. In a significant move ahead of the tournament slated to begin in early February, Ryan Rickelton and Tristan Stubbs have been named as replacements in the 15-player South African squad.
They come in for Tony de Zorzi and Donovan Ferreira, both of whom were unable to recover from injuries in time for the showpiece event.
De Zorzi, a wicketkeeper-batter, suffered a right hamstring muscle tear during South Africa’s recent tour of India, and his rehabilitation has not progressed sufficiently to make him match-fit by the opening of the T20 World Cup. Ferreira’s injury is equally unfortunate — he endured a fracture to his left clavicle during an SA20 match, ruling him out of both the upcoming three-match T20I series against the West Indies and the World Cup itself.
Rickelton and Stubbs are no strangers to international cricket and had been part of South Africa’s white-ball squads during the recent tour of India. Their inclusion is seen as a strategic attempt to bolster the batting lineup, with Rickelton’s ability to anchor the innings and Stubbs’ dynamic power-hitting offering added depth and flexibility. The Proteas will be looking to regroup quickly following these changes as they strive for their first T20 World Cup title, having come close in previous editions.
David Miller’s Fitness Adds Uncertainty
In addition to the confirmed changes, David Miller, one of South Africa’s most experienced and destructive middle-order batsmen, is now a major doubt for the tournament. Miller sustained an adductor (groin) muscle injury while playing in the SA20 for the Paarl Royals, and this has sidelined him from the West Indies T20I series. Cricket South Africa has stated that Miller’s final participation in the World Cup will hinge on the results of upcoming fitness assessments, leaving his status uncertain as the Proteas finalize their preparations.
To cover for Miller’s absence in the T20I series, Rubin Hermann has been drafted into the squad, giving the management additional options ahead of the World Cup build-up. South Africa are placed in Group D alongside teams such as Canada, New Zealand, Afghanistan and the UAE, with their campaign beginning against Canada in Ahmedabad on February 9.
