Sri Lanka Announce Squad For T20I Series Against West Indies

Sri Lanka Cricket has unveiled its 17-member squad for the upcoming T20I series against the West Indies, starting October 13, 2024, in Dambulla. Several notable players have missed out on selection, including former captain Dasun Shanaka, pacers Dushmantha Chameera, and Dilshan Madushanka.

The most significant return is middle-order batter Bhanuka Rajapaksa, who comes back to the squad after reversing his international retirement. Rajapaksa’s last appearance for Sri Lanka was in January 2023. Charith Asalanka has been named the captain for the series, marking another step in Sri Lanka’s effort to rebuild their T20I team after their disappointing exit from the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Spin Attack Led by Hasaranga

Wanindu Hasaranga, who stepped down from captaincy earlier this year, will lead Sri Lanka’s spin attack. He will be supported by Maheesh Theekshana, Jeffrey Vandersay, and Dunith Wellalage. Vandersay, who has been in and out of the national setup, is set to play his first T20I in over two years.

The return of these key players highlights Sri Lanka’s intent to strengthen their bowling lineup for the series against the Men in Maroon. With a mix of young talent and experienced players, the Lankan side looks determined to improve their recent performances.

Series Schedule and Recent History

The T20I series will consist of three matches, all scheduled at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium on October 13, 15, and 17. Following the T20I games, the teams will shift to the 50-over format, with three ODIs to be played in Pallekele.

This series marks the first bilateral contest between Sri Lanka and the West Indies since 2021. In that encounter, the West Indies won both the T20I and ODI series, while the two-match Test series ended in a draw. As Sri Lanka aims for redemption, this home series provides an opportunity to test their revamped squad under Asalanka’s leadership.
