Sri Lankan all-rounder Angelo Mathews announced his retirement from Test cricket via his X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday, May 23. The 37-year-old last featured in Sri Lanka’s recent home Test series against Australia in February.
Angelo Mathews will play his last Test match on June 17, when Sri Lanka faces Bangladesh at home. After that, he will retire from Test cricket. He is Sri Lanka’s third-highest run-scorer in Tests, with 8,167 runs at an average of 44.62, including 16 centuries in 118 matches.
Since making his debut in 2009, Mathews has been a key figure in the Sri Lankan Test lineup. In addition to his batting contributions, he also claimed 33 Test wickets, including one four-wicket haul. He shared his retirement announcement on X with the message:
“With a grateful heart and unforgettable memories, it is time for me to say goodbye to the most cherished format of the game, International Test Cricket. The past 17 years of playing cricket for Sri Lanka has been my highest honour and pride. Nothing can match that feeling of patriotism and servitude when one dons the National jersey.”
He continued:
“I have given everything to cricket and cricket has given everything to me in return and made me the person I am today. The first Test against Bangladesh in June will be my last red-ball appearance for my country.”
Angelo Mathews Confirms Availability for Limited-Overs Formats
Angelo Mathews has affirmed that he will continue to be available for selection in Sri Lanka’s white-ball squads despite retiring from Test cricket. The experienced all-rounder has featured in 226 ODIs and 90 T20Is, amassing over 7,000 runs across both formats.
In his retirement announcement, Mathews reiterated his commitment to limited-overs cricket, stating:
“While I bid adieu to the Test format, as discussed with selectors I will remain available for selection for the white ball format, if and when my country needs me.”
