Steve Smith Bids Farewell To ODIs, Receives Heartfelt Tributes

Australian batting maestro Steve Smith announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs), marking the end of an illustrious career in the 50-over format. Despite this decision, the 35-year-old will continue to represent Australia in Test and T20I cricket.

His choice to remain available for T20Is may be influenced by the upcoming 2026 T20 World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where cricket will feature in the shortest format. Smith’s departure from ODIs triggered an outpouring of tributes from fellow cricketers, both from Australia and around the world, recognizing his remarkable achievements.

David Warner Calls Smith the Best Teammate

Several of Smith’s Australian teammates, including Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, and former opener David Warner, lauded his contributions to the game. Warner, who shared a long-standing camaraderie with Smith from their days in New South Wales (NSW) cricket to their journey in the national team, paid an emotional tribute on Instagram. Calling Smith the “best player I’ve played alongside,” Warner shared a series of pictures from their career together.

“Congrats mate on an unbelievable one-day career. Blues to Australia, loved being alongside you. You’ve served the country unbelievably well and hopefully, this decision prolongs you to keep going in the Test arena. Best player I’ve played alongside in my career. #Goat #legend #cricket,” wrote Warner.

Shane Watson Remembers Special Moments with Smith

Former Australian all-rounder Shane Watson also honored Smith’s ODI legacy, reminiscing about their time on the field together. Watson recalled Smith’s crucial contributions during the 2015 Cricket World Cup, particularly his match-winning innings in the final. Expressing gratitude for sharing those moments, Watson pointed out two standout performances in Smith’s ODI career: his composed 65 against Pakistan in the quarterfinal and his elegant 105 against India in the semifinal.

“@steve_smith49 congratulations on an incredible ODI career. You and your family should be unbelievably proud of all that you achieved. I feel very fortunate to have had so many special memories on the field together, the most special being out in the middle when you hit the winning runs in the 2015 World Cup final,” wrote Watson.

He further praised Smith’s ability to handle high-pressure situations, particularly against Pakistan’s Wahab Riaz in the quarterfinal and his effortless stroke play against India in the semifinal. Watson concluded by congratulating Smith on his phenomenal career and wishing him continued success in Test and T20I cricket.
