Steve Smith Likely To Lead Australia in Ashes If Cummins Misses Out

Australia might once again turn to Steve Smith for captaincy duties in the upcoming Ashes 2025–26 series, as current skipper Pat Cummins continues to recover from a back injury. Chief selector George Bailey confirmed that if Cummins fails to regain full fitness before the series opener on November 21 in Perth, Smith will step in as captain.

Cummins’ injury has already ruled him out of the white-ball series against India, casting doubt on his availability for the marquee Ashes clash against England.

Bailey stated that the leadership transition, if required, would be seamless, describing it as “business as usual” for the Australian side. The management remains confident in Smith’s leadership experience, having previously guided Australia in multiple formats during Cummins’ absences.

Steve Smith’s Return to Leadership Spotlight

Smith’s possible return as captain would mark another chapter in his evolving journey as a senior figure in Australian cricket. The former Test skipper, who last led the team in 2018 before his suspension, has since regained both form and trust.

Whenever called upon to lead, Smith has maintained a composed and strategic approach, earning praise from teammates and selectors alike. Recently returning from New York, Smith has resumed his preparations at the Cricket New South Wales training facility.

He is expected to feature in the Sheffield Shield to regain match fitness and rhythm ahead of the high-pressure Ashes contest. His leadership, tactical acumen, and batting prowess could play a crucial role if Cummins remains unavailable for the initial games.

Focus on Stability and Smooth Transition

Despite Cummins’ injury, the Australian camp is focused on ensuring stability and continuity in leadership. Bailey emphasized that Cummins, even while recovering, will stay closely connected with the squad, working alongside the coaching staff and leadership group to guide strategic decisions.

The team’s structure—built around experienced leaders like Smith, vice-captain Travis Head, and senior players such as Marnus Labuschagne and Mitchell Starc—ensures that Australia remains well-prepared regardless of who wears the captain’s armband.

The selectors and management are optimistic about Cummins’ progress but remain pragmatic in planning for contingencies. As the Ashes approach, all eyes will be on how quickly the Australian captain recovers, and whether Smith once again takes the helm in one of cricket’s fiercest rivalries.
