Steve Smith is not the only option as the next Australian skipper said Cricket Australia’s Chairman Earl Eddings. Smith was relinquished from captaincy after the ball-tampering scandal in 2018 and Eddings has recently said that several potential young talents can be seen as the next Australian skipper. However, he said that the present captains across formats are doing pretty well and a thought on the same will be taken in due course.
In a special interaction with ESPN Cricinfo, Eddings opened up on his thoughts on selecting the next captain of the Australian team across all formats.
“First of all we’ve got three great captains in Meg, Aaron and Tim. We’ve got some great young leaders coming through. So it’s not just about should Steve take over, it’s about what’s best overall” CA chairman Earl Eddings told ESPNcricinfo.
He further said that the various Australian captains are doing a good job at the moment and that the board is yet to sit over a discussion on Steve Smith as the next captain of the team.

“Steve’s a great young man and he was a good captain when he was there. Like any succession there’s planning in place. Have we sat down as a board specifically to discuss the next captain? No we haven’t.”
CA Will Wait To Take Call on Steve Smith: Earl Eddings
Eddings next said that with Aaron Finch and Tim Paine doing a good job at the moment, the cricket board is looking forward to recommendations after which they will have a further discussion on the matter.
“We’ll be guided by the recommendations of the selection panel, they always come back to our board at the right time with their recommendation, and we’ll go through it in detail when they do that.” With Paine and Finch leading the side well in Tests and limited over cricket, CA can wait to take that call” said Cricket Australia’s Chairman.
For now, Steve Smith looks focused to do well in the Boxing-Day test in Melbourne. So far he has a good record in such test matches.
Smith has a good record in Boxing-Day tests in his career. In his seven Boxing Day tests, the right-hander has scored 908 runs at 113.50 with four centuries and three other scores more than 50. At his home ground in Sydney, his next best average at home, he has an average of 67.88.
