Steve Smith can still potentially lead the Australian side again but before that, he has to go through a process says, Justin Langer. The Australian head coach Langer hinted that Steve Smith can still lead Australia in future. After the infamous ball-tampering saga in Cape Town, Smith was sacked as the captain.

Cricket Australia took a firm step and banned their star batsman for a lengthy period. Since his comeback, Smith has consistently scored runs and was expected to lead Australia after expiration of his captaincy ban. However, he has continued to play under Tim Paine in Tests and Aaron Finch in white-ball cricket.

Today in the second T20I against India, Australia surprisingly named Matthew Wade as skipper instead of Smith. Former Australia captain Mark Taylor believes that Australia needs to move on from the ball-tampering scandal and give another opportunity to Smith to lead the Australian side.

“You’re not making a call forever. You’ve got these two T20s before the Test matches start, where Tim Paine will captain, I think to test the waters”, Mark Taylor told Nine’s Today program.

“To me, now we’ve got to move on (ball-tampering incident). Steve Smith is still looked at by this side as a leader in that team; even Finch, the one-day-T20 captain and Tim Paine go to Steve Smith for advice at times. He’s a senior player. I’m sure he’d like another opportunity,” he added.

Meanwhile, Justin Langer also holds that Smith in the past has done a fine job as captain but needs to go through a particular process before he leads the side again. He also added that he is on the right track and has been able to earn the respect of the fans during the last Ashes series.

“Steve Smith has done a brilliant job in the past. There is a process to go through until he becomes captain again. We’ll go through that”.

“We know what a famous player he is, we’ve seen that his whole career. When the English crowd gave him a standing ovation at the Oval last year, talk about earning respect, and earning back respect was one of the fondest moments of my coaching career. He’s doing all the right things to show leadership without a title at the moment”, Justin Langer told Fox Sports regarding the future of Smith as captain.
