“India Fought Really Hard Today,” Steve Smith Reflects Back On India’s Effort To Draw The Fifth Test

One of the best batsmen going around in the world, Steve Smith was having a patchy form in the ongoing Test series against India until the Sydney Test. In the 4 innings he played, Smith failed to register a single fifty or hundred for that matter. Moreover, people said that he was being a bunny of Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin as on most occasions it was Ashwin who got the prized wicket of Steve Smith.

But things were a lot different at the Sydney Cricket Ground as Steve Smith ended up registering his first hundred of the season scoring 131 runs in the first innings followed by a knock of 87 runs in the second essay putting Australia in a commanding position going ahead in the Test. Just like the previous Test, Ashwin yet again scalped the key wicket of Steve Smith in the 2nd Innings whereas he was a victim of Ravindra Jadeja’s steller throw from outside the thirty-yard circle in the first essay.

Always means a lot when you score a hundred for your country – Steve Smith

At the end of the third Test, Steve Smith was awarded the man of the match award for his scores of 131 and 87. During the presentation ceremony, Steve Smith lauded India for fighting back hard despite the Aussie bowlers going hard at them.

He also spoke about how much this century meant for him to score another century for Australia, with that coming at his home ground was even more special for Smith.

“India fought really hard. Our bowlers kept coming and coming, did their hardest today. On day three or four, we felt that a few kept low, few that bounced a bit more. But there was not much of it today. They fought really hard. Always means a lot when you score a hundred for your country. To be able to do that here on my home ground is pretty special. Doesn’t mean a lot now as we didn’t win the game.”

Smith hopeful about winning the series in Brisbane

Steve Smith reckons that the record in Brisbane might fancy their chances of wrapping up the series. In addition to this, he talked about how he paced his innings and changed gears when required according to the situation of the match.

“(We’ll) move on now to Brisbane, we have a very good record there. Looking forward to playing there in a few days time. Wanted to be a little bit more aggressive at times, went up and down through the gears throughout my innings, absorbed the pressure when needed to. Not too much else, just watched the ball hard and concentrated well. Nice to spend some time.”
