Sufiyan Muqeem Makes Headlines With His Stunning Spell

Sufiyan Muqeem

Sufiyan Muqeem

Sufiyan Muqeem, Pakistan’s rare left-arm wrist-spinner, has made headlines with his extraordinary performance against Zimbabwe. In the second T20I at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, Muqeem delivered a historic spell, claiming five wickets for just three runs. This outstanding effort left Zimbabwe reeling at their lowest-ever T20I total of 57.

Entering as Pakistan’s sixth bowling option, Muqeem showcased his immense talent by dismantling Zimbabwe’s batting lineup in just 16 deliveries. His victims included Ryan Burl, Tashinga Musekiwa, Clive Madande, and Richard Ngarava, highlighting his ability to outfox batters across all skill levels.

Early Career and Struggles

Muqeem, aged 25, made his T20I debut during the 2023 Asian Games against Hong Kong. While his initial appearances were modest, a reshuffling phase within the Pakistan team offered him another chance during the Australia tour.

Though he didn’t make a significant impact in that series, his performances in Zimbabwe have showcased his potential. Muqeem also played in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for Peshawar Zalmi, but with just four wickets in five matches, his domestic credentials were limited. His remarkable spell in Bulawayo could pave the way for his first-class debut and further national team opportunities.

Zimbabwe’s Collapse and Pakistan’s Dominance

Zimbabwe’s innings unraveled quickly after their openers, Brian Bennett (21) and Tadiwanashe Marumani (16), provided a steady start with a 37-run partnership. The team fell apart once the opening stand was broken, with no other batter crossing double digits.

Pakistan, on the other hand, wrapped up the chase in just 5.3 overs without losing a wicket. Saim Ayub (38* off 18 balls) and Omair Yousuf (22* off 15 balls) ensured a dominant victory. Zimbabwe’s captain Sikandar Raza’s decision to bat first backfired, as Muqeem’s spin wizardry left their side humiliated.

Muqeem’s breakthrough performance not only established him as a promising spinner but also highlighted Pakistan’s growing bowling depth, signaling a bright future for the young talent.
