India won the last ICC trophy under Ms. Dhoni in 2013. Since winning that champions trophy India has failed to earn the victory in any big ICC event. However, there is no problem with their performance. India has been consistently remaining on the Top 3 ICC rankings and winning several series, but they have failed to capture an ICC trophy.

Since 2014 India has been part of every semi-final of ICC event but was unable to lift the trophy. Men in Blue were defeated by Sri Lanka in the 2014 T20 World Cup final whereas they lost against Australia in the 2015 ODI WC and to West Indies in the 2016 T20 WC in the series.

In 2017 Virat Kohli-led team India lost the 2017 Champions Trophy final against Pakistan. Again India was eliminated in the semi-final of the 2019 ODI World Cup, losing to New Zealand. Recently in the WTC final once again Virat Kohli and Co. lost to Kane Williamson led Blackcaps.

While decoding the team India’s recent defeats in ICC events, former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar stated that New Zealand cricketers found the conditions a bit easy.

“If you look at the last few matches, that seems to be the case. Perhaps there is a mental blockage because of which we are not able to win an ICC title. But about this WTC title, we should remember that the conditions were exactly the ones that New Zealand players face. So they found it a little easy and that was not case with India,” he added.

Sunil Gavaskar still backed India and asserted:

“We should remember that before pointing fingers at our team. Think of the fact that the conditions were like New Zealand and that’s what their team took advantage of. That’s why they could win the World Test Championship.”

New champions in ICC events since 2013

A very fascinating fact to have a look at is that since the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy, there has been a new champion every single time. India won it in 2013 and since then Sri Lanka, Australia, West Indies, Pakistan, England, and now New Zealand have won an ICC trophy from 2014-2021. The next big tournament will be held in the UAE later this year, i.e. the 2021 T20 WC.

It will be very interesting to see that a new team like South Africa will win T20 WC or India will end their 8-year-long ICC-trophy drought.
