“Super Grateful To The People Who Stood By My Side” – Shreyas Iyer Appreciates NCA Staff Before Rejoining Team India

Veteran India middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer expressed his appreciation to Nitin Patel, the physiotherapist at the NCA, and Rajinikanth Sivagnanam, the strength and conditioning coach, for their assistance during his recovery and rehabilitation following a significant back injury.

In March, Shreyas Iyer experienced a back injury and had surgery the subsequent month, causing him to be absent from both IPL 2023 and India’s bilateral series. Following rehabilitation and taking part in numerous practice matches at the NCA, he was selected on Monday as India announced a 17-player squad for the 2023 Asia Cup.

“Been a long journey but I’m super grateful to the people who stood by my side to help me to get where I am today,” he wrote in an Instagram post. “Thank you Nitin bhai, Rajini sir and everyone at The NCA, who’ve been tirelessly helping me. Much love and much appreciated .”

Patel has been involved with the Indian men’s squad, whereas Sivagnanam was associated with the Delhi Capitals and provided assistance to Iyer for a shoulder injury ahead of IPL 2021.

“Shreyas Iyer is now fully fit”- Ajit Agarkar

Providing an update on Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul, both of whom underwent rehabilitation at the NCA due to injuries in IPL 2023, Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar mentioned that Shreyas Iyer has made a “full recovery,” whereas KL Rahul continues to have a “minor discomfort.”

“Both are coming off long-term serious injuries,” Agarkar said in a press conference. “Shreyas has been declared completely fit. Rahul, not his original injury but there’s a niggle, which is why Sanju (Samson) is travelling. We’ll get a report from the physio at some stage but we all expect him to be fit. If not at the start, by the second or third game, but he’s on track. Shreyas has been passed fit, which is good news for us.”

This is positive news as Shreyas possesses an impressive track record at the 4th position, amassing slightly over 800 runs, which includes two centuries. The Asia Cup is set to commence on August 30, with India initiating their journey against Pakistan at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on September 2.
