The ICC Men’s T20I Batsmen Rankings saw a major change, with Australian all-rounder Travis Head overtaking India’s Suryakumar Yadav to claim the top spot. The Head’s performance in the 2024 T20 World Cup (Head scored 255 in seven matches, including a memorable 76 against India) was crucial despite Australia losing the tournament.
Thanks to his performance, Head is now the second-highest run scorer in the competition. He replaced Suryakumar, who had occupied the top position since December 2023. Head has contributed 31 runs against Bangladesh, a duck against Afghanistan, and an important 76 against India during the last week.
Suryakumar’s recent scores against Afghanistan were 53, against Bangladesh, they were 6, and against Australia, they were 31, with his low score against Bangladesh being particularly expensive.
Though Head is leading by just two points and won’t be competing in the next games, Suryakumar has a chance to take the lead back shortly. If India advances, Suryakumar might play in one more match after competing in at least the quarterfinal versus England.
“Suryakumar Yadav has been the top-ranked men’s batter”- ICC
Australian all-rounder Travis Head has surpassed Suryakumar Yadav of India to take the top spot as the T20I cricket batsman. With 844 rating points, Head, who moved up four ranks, now holds the top slot in the standings, followed by Yadav (842).
“Suryakumar Yadav has been the top-ranked men’s batter in the T20 format since December 2023, having also held the No. 1 spot on previous occasions. But SKY’s tenure is no more, thanks to some stunning displays at the ongoing ICC Men’s T20 World Cup by an in-form Australian,” the ICC said in a press release.
“Aussie opener Travis Head is the newly crowned leader of the rankings, having enjoyed a stunning run since cementing his spot at the top of the order for his national side in the shortest format,” the ICC said.
“Head saved his best for last in the T20 World Cup, slamming a brilliant 76 in a losing cause against India, keeping a high-scoring game alive for far longer than looked likely after Rohit Sharma had teed up a huge score for India,” the ICC added.
