Suryakumar Yadav Set To Play For Mumbai In Ranji Trophy

After leading India to a 2-0 victory in the ongoing T20I series against Bangladesh, Suryakumar Yadav is likely to join Mumbai for their second Ranji Trophy game against Maharashtra. The final match of the T20I series will take place on October 12, and Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy match will begin on October 18.

As the defending champions, Mumbai is eager to have Yadav in their squad for this crucial domestic match. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has confirmed that Suryakumar has made himself available for selection.

Increased Gaps Between Ranji Trophy Matches

This season, the Ranji Trophy schedule has been adjusted to alleviate the workload on players. The tournament is divided into two phases, with the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (T20) and Vijay Hazare Trophy (50-over) competitions taking place in between.

The adjustments were made due to concerns about the weather in North India and the players’ recovery time. Notably, the gap between Ranji matches has been increased to four days, which is a step forward in addressing concerns about player fatigue.

This is in response to feedback from players like Shardul Thakur and former cricketer Rahul Dravid, who emphasized the physical demands of back-to-back games.

Player Workload and Recovery Concerns

The issue of player workload has been a topic of discussion among cricketers and officials alike. Shardul Thakur pointed out that in the past, players had only three-day breaks between Ranji Trophy matches, which wasn’t enough for recovery.

With the new schedule, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) aims to reduce the risk of injuries by providing more rest days between games.

Thakur noted that continuing with tight schedules would result in more injuries, calling for the BCCI to reconsider the structure for future seasons. This season’s changes are a significant move towards ensuring player well-being.
