India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav recently underwent surgery for a sports hernia in Munich, Germany, and is now in recovery as he prepares for a packed white-ball calendar. Notably, this isn’t his first such procedure—he had a similar surgery in 2024 after suffering an ankle injury during the South Africa white-ball series.

The star batter last played in the 2025 IPL for Mumbai Indians (MI), delivering his best season yet. He emerged as a strong contender for the Orange Cap, eventually finishing as the second-highest run-getter with 717 runs at a striking rate of 167.91. Suryakumar took to Instagram to share an update, confirming the success of the surgery and his ongoing recovery process.

“Life Update : Underwent surgery for a sports hernia in the lower right abdomen. Grateful to share that after a smooth surgery, I’m already on the road to recovery. Can’t wait to be back,” the cricketer wrote on his post.

This is Suryakumar Yadav’s third surgical procedure in the past three years. He had ankle surgery in 2023, followed by a sports hernia operation in 2024, the same issue he has now addressed again.

India‘s upcoming white-ball challenge will be a tour of Bangladesh after the conclusion of the England series. The three-match T20I series, scheduled for August, is likely to mark the beginning of the young squad’s preparations for the 2026 T20 World Cup, which will be held at home in the February-March period.

Suryakumar Yadav Consulted a London Specialist Before Undergoing Surgery

As per earlier reports, Suryakumar Yadav was in England around the time India’s red-ball team was gearing up for their series opener at Headingley in Leeds. During his stay, he consulted a specialist before proceeding with his surgery in Munich. Following an initial two-week recovery period, the T20I captain is expected to begin his rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.

India’s T20I series against Bangladesh is set to begin on August 26, after the conclusion of the three-match ODI leg. In the lead-up to the 2026 T20 World Cup, India will also play T20I series against Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand.
