A few days after missing out on India’s T20I captaincy, Suryakumar Yadav unfollowed Mumbai Indians on Instagram. The star batter has also seemingly deleted all posts related to the franchise dating back to 2021. At the time of writing, the only recent post featuring an MI training jersey on his profile is a picture alongside MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma.
However, the five-time IPL champions are still following the 35-year-old. Mumbai Indians had bought Suryakumar for ₹3.2 crore during the IPL 2018 mega auction, and he has remained a key member of the squad ever since. He is currently MI’s second-highest run-scorer, with 4020 runs in 125 innings at a strike rate of 151.24.
However, his recent activity on social media has sparked speculation among fans regarding his future with Mumbai Indians. The explosive batter had a disappointing IPL 2026 season, managing 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20.76 and a strike rate of 147.54.

“We Thought This Was Best” – Ajit Agarkar on Shreyas Iyer Replacing Suryakumar as T20I Captain
Suryakumar Yadav was recently removed as India’s T20I captain and also lost his spot in the squad. Chief selector Ajit Agarkar spoke about the decision, admitting it was a difficult call given that the aggressive batter had guided India to the T20 World Cup 2026 title.
He stated that Shreyas Iyer’s appointment as the new captain was taken with a long-term vision in mind. Speaking after India announced their squad for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England, Agarkar said (via ESPNcricinfo):
“With regards to Surya, obviously, it’s a tough one, having just won the World Cup, but as it happens, after most World Cups, we try and reassess what the best way forward is. Partly his own form, but also looking at the next two-year cycle, or a little bit more than two years now till the next World Cup, we thought this was the best way forward. Like I said, Shreyas is a well-deserving candidate.”
