India registered a memorable triumph over Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, securing their record-extending ninth title. Despite the victory, the Suryakumar Yadav-led team was not handed the trophy. The controversy arose because the Indian players refused to receive the cup from Asian Cricket Council (ACC) head Mohsin Naqvi, who is also Pakistan’s interior minister and the Pakistan Cricket Board chairman.
Naqvi, along with other officials, stood on the podium waiting for the players, but the Indians declined to accept both the trophy and the winners’ medals from him. This unusual act prompted Naqvi to cancel the ceremony entirely, after which he left the stadium with the trophy and medals. In response, Indian cricketers later took an indirect dig at Naqvi by sharing photos with a fake trophy, a move that quickly drew attention across social media.
Tilak Varma Steers India to Glory
The match itself was a gripping contest where India chased down a modest 147-run target. Their start was shaky as the top order collapsed to 20/3 within the fourth over. However, Tilak Varma steadied the innings with maturity, first partnering with Sanju Samson to rebuild, and later accelerating alongside Shivam Dube. Varma’s ability to rotate strike and maintain composure under pressure proved vital.
He reached his fourth T20I half-century off 41 deliveries and went on to remain unbeaten on 69 from 53 balls. His calmness guided India to a five-wicket win, once again affirming their dominance in Asian cricket. The world champions, though denied the official trophy on stage, had every reason to celebrate yet another title win.
Post-Match Drama and Official Confirmation
After the final, the presentation ceremony was unusually delayed for over an hour. When it finally began, Indian players came forward only to receive individual awards from other dignitaries. Kuldeep Yadav, Abhishek Sharma, and Tilak Varma collected their respective awards, while Pakistan captain Salman Ali Agha accepted the runners-up cheque directly from Naqvi. Throughout the process, the Indian team refrained from acknowledging the ACC chairman, while Naqvi himself avoided applauding the Indian winners.
This fueled speculation until host broadcaster presenter Simon Doull clarified, “I have been informed by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) that the Indian cricket team will not be collecting their awards tonight. So that does conclude the post-match presentation.” Later, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that the Indian players had refused to accept the Asia Cup trophy because they did not wish to take it directly from Naqvi, who was at the centre of the controversy.
