In the recently concluded, ICC World Test Championship final, New Zealand beat India by eight wickets. This was New Zealand’s first ICC title in 21 years.

There have been many arguments regarding the format of the World Test Championship. Cricketer turned Commentator Aakash Chopra sugessted that the table toppers should get the privilege of hosting the final.

In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Aakash Chopra said, “There are a couple of suggestions. You will not be able to change anything else as you have already announced that there will be only six series and home and away will have the same weightage but I have a suggestion for the final. The team that tops the WTC table should host the final.”

He added that this should be the case if the final is going to be a one-off match between the two teams.

“You might have to move the final two-three months here or there because of that but it is fine if you are playing just one match. If you are going to have three, it is great, then you can do it anywhere.”

In this scenario, he also stated that the visiting team should be allowed to decide whether they want to bat first or not, to eliminate home advantage.

“When you are doing this, you should eliminate the toss. You should give the toss to the visitor, he can decide but it should happen where the hosts are.”

Virat Kohli bats for Best-of-Three final

Indian Skipper Virat Kohli is not in agreement of a one-off World Test Championship final. He feels that a best-of-three final would capture the essence of Test cricket better.

“I am not in absolute agreement of deciding the best Test side in the world over the course of one game. If it is a Test series, it has to be a test of character over three Tests – which team has the ability to come back in the series or totally blow away the other team. It can’t just be pressure applied over two days of good cricket and then you suddenly you are not a good Test side anymore. I don’t believe in it.” Kohli said after his team’s eight-wicket loss in Southampton.
