Lucknow Super Giants named New Zealand pace bowler Matt Henry as a replacement for David Willey for the Indian Premier League 2024. David Willey was bought by Lucknow Super Giants in the auction for Rs 2 Crore.

Willey decided to withdraw from the tournament due to personal reasons. Lucknow Super Giants suffered 20 run loss in their first game of the season against Rajasthan Royals at Sawai Man Singh Stadium, Jaipur on 24^th March. They will play their 2^nd match this season against Punjab Kings at Ekana Stadium, Lucknow on 30^th March.

Matt Henry has been picked by Lucknow Super Giants for a base price of 1.25 Crore. This will be his third franchise in IPL after being picked by Chennai Super Kings and Punjab Kings.

Henry has played just two IPL matches so far playing for Punjab Kings. During his stint in IPL, Henry took a total of 1 wicket for Punjab Kings in the 2017 edition. Lucknow Super Giants struggled in the bowling department against Rajasthan Royals conceding 193 for 4 in 20 overs.

Matt Henry was the pick of the bowlers during the Test series played at home against Australia recently. He grabbed a total of 17 wickets in 4 innings and was named the player of the series award. New Zealand lost the 2-match Test series against Australia by 0-2.

Henry can swing the ball, especially with the red ball which makes batting very tough. He has played 25 Test matches, 82 ODI matches, and 17 T20I matches for New Zealand. His performance looked impressive with 95 wickets in test matches, 141 wickets in the One-day international format, and 20 wickets in T20I format.

He made his T20 debut for Canterbury in the New Zealand T20 tournament. Henry has taken 151 wickets from 131 matches (126 innings) so far at an economy of 8.39 runs per over with figures of 4 for 24.

David Willey’s stint in IPL

David Willey played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in 2023. He took a total of 3 wickets from 4 matches at an economy of 7 runs per over with figures of 2 for 16.

Willey played a total of 11 IPL games picking up 6 wickets at an economy of 7.56 runs per over. He made his IPL debut for CSK in the 2018 edition.

The left-arm swing bowler David Willey picked his 100^th One-day international wicket during the final World Cup match against Pakistan played at Eden Gardens, Kolkata on 11^th November 2023. It was a superb bowling effort by David Willey with some lovely bowling efforts that put the Pakistani batting lineup under pressure.

England got off to a great start as David Willey dismissed Abdullah Shafique with the very first delivery and then dismissed Fakhar Zaman to put Pakistan under pressure. He showed great control not allowing the batters to score runs easily. Willey then got rid of well-set Agha Salman with a simple catch to Stokes at mid-on. England bowled out Pakistan for 244 and won the match by 93 runs.

David Willey finished off with figures of 3 for 56 in 10 overs. He showed his class with quickfire 15 off 5 deliveries with 2 fours and 1 six that helped England post 337 for 9. The defending Champions England finished at number 6^th position with 3 wins and 6 losses.

He did not play the first few matches before Willey showed promise with the new ball picking up 11 wickets from 6 matches ( 6 innings) at an economy of 5.07 runs per over including best figures of 3 for 45 against India at Lucknow.

David Willey had a decent career in the One-day international format for the England team. He made his ODI debut against Ireland on 8^th May 2015. Since his debut, Willey played a total of 73 matches ( 72 innings) and grabbed 100 wickets at an economy of 5.52 runs per over and best figures of 5 for 30.

Strengths:

England’s biggest strength in recent times in ODI cricket has been their formidable batting line-up. The depth in the batting attack provides stability and adaptability to the team, with players who can play in different gears.

England hasn’t enjoyed much success in Indian conditions in recent years in ODI cricket. They have won only four ODI matches in India since 2011, and have lost 12. Another threat to England is their middle order’s inexperience in Indian conditions. Liam Livingstone has only played two ODIs in India previously, while Harry Brook has yet to play in India. Moeen Ali too doesn’t record with the bat in Indian conditions, averaging just 28.80 in ODI cricket.

Ben Stokes’ most recent ODI participation was on July 19, 2022

The all-rounder participated in just 10 ODIs following the victorious 2019 World Cup campaign held on home turf. He had also taken a break for mental health reasons in the meantime. Kedar Jadhav has returned to his former franchise, the Royal Challengers Bangalore for the remainder of the 2023 Indian Premeir League season. He will be making a comeback to the tournament after a gap of one year. The franchise signed Kedar Jadhav as a replacement for David Willey. The England all-rounder played four matches for the Royal Challengers Bangalore and scalped three wickets.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore announced that David Willey suffered a fracture to his toe and adductor strain, and will not be a part of the remainder of the tournament. They wrote, “David Willey has been ruled out of #IPL2023 due to fractured toe and adductor strain. Willey, you were brilliant throughout! We stand by your side as you rest, recover and return stronger than ever, mate.”

Kedar Jadhav was part of the Marathi commentary panel in the 2023 Indian Premier League. However, now will be back playing in the tournament for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. England seamer David Willey has suffered another setback in his career as he’s been tested COVID-19 positive. The Yorkshire County Cricket Club confirmed the news on Twitter. Subsequently, three other players from Yorkshire have also been quarantined after they made contact outside the bio-secure bubble.

Now, a total of 4 players have been ruled out of the Yorkshire side from the ongoing T20 Blast tournament. The other three players have been identified as Matthew Fisher, Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Josh Poysden. All the 4 players including David Willey have been put into 14 days mandatory quarantine.

David Willey Tested Positive for COVID-19

Yorkshire County’s official twitter handle broke the news on Twitter, “YCCC can confirm that Matthew Fisher, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, Josh Poysden and David Willey will be unavailable for the remaining Vitality Blast group matches after a positive COVID test was received”

After which David Willey himself responded to the Tweet, saying he’s absolutely devastated to have been in contact along with other three players and will now be missing the remainder of the games.

Meanwhile, David Willey’s career has been an absolute roller-coaster since last one year. After being dropped from the World Cup squad in favour of Jofra Archer, he made a comeback into the side earlier this year. Just when he was finding his touch, he was again dropped from the England squad and now he’s been tested positive for the novel Coronavirus.

Furthermore, as of now his side Yorkshire is placed fifth in the points table with 6 points to their name. They have managed to only win 2 games out of their last 8 games. And now with Yorkshire’s 4 players now ruled out they’re in a spot of bother.
