In the highly anticipated final match of the 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL), the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) emerged victorious over the Delhi Capitals (DC), securing the championship title. The match showcased exemplary performances, with Shreyanka Patil standing out as a shining star for RCB.

From the outset, both teams displayed determination and skill, setting the stage for an intense battle. DC, aiming to redeem themselves after a previous loss in the final, sought to claim their first WPL title. However, RCB was equally motivated, led by their captain, Patil, who proved to be instrumental in their success.

Batting first, DC put up a competitive total, anchored by the stellar performance of their top-order batters. Smriti Mandhana and Meg Lanning led the charge, scoring crucial runs and laying a strong foundation for their team. Despite facing a formidable bowling attack from RCB, DC managed to set a challenging target.

In response, RCB began their innings with determination, fueled by Patil’s aggressive yet composed batting display. Supported by her teammates, she took charge of the chase, playing shots all around the ground and keeping the scoreboard ticking. Patil’s innings were a masterclass in timing and technique, as she effortlessly manoeuvred the ball and found gaps with precision.

As the match progressed, RCB’s batting lineup showcased depth and resilience, with contributions from various players. Each partnership added valuable runs, edging RCB closer to the target set by DC. Despite some late breakthroughs by the DC bowlers, RCB remained focused on their goal, maintaining their composure under pressure.

In the end, it was Patil’s brilliance that guided RCB across the finish line. Her innings was a testament to her skill and temperament, as she led her team to a memorable victory in the WPL final. With this win, RCB clinched the championship title, marking a historic moment in their WPL journey.

Here are some of the reactions:

On the other hand, DC faced disappointment for the second consecutive year, falling short in the final yet again. Despite their valiant efforts throughout the tournament, they were unable to overcome RCB’s dominance in the ultimate showdown.

Overall, the WPL final of 2024 will be remembered for Patil’s exceptional performance, as she etched her name in the annals of cricketing history. Both teams displayed sportsmanship and grit, making it a fitting finale to an enthralling season of women’s cricket.

Mumbai Indians (MI) newcomer S Sajana has left a lasting impression in the ongoing WPL 2024 season. She struck a six with the only ball she faced, securing a dramatic victory for her team against the Delhi Capitals (DC) in Bengaluru on Friday, February 23.

In the final over, DC bowler Alice Capsey had 12 runs to defend. Despite taking two wickets and narrowing the requirement to five runs off the last ball, Sajana exhibited remarkable composure on the grand stage and delivered the decisive blow.

S Sajana confidently stepped forward and hit the ball over the long-on boundary, making the Mumbai Indians’ team very happy. She was so excited about the shot that she lifted her teammate, Amanjot Kaur, in celebration.

On the opposite end, Alice Capsey was on her knees, expressing disbelief. The video captures the intense drama on the final ball:

In the WPL 2023 season, Mumbai’s lower middle order wasn’t thoroughly challenged, creating a perception of heavy reliance on their star all-rounders. However, a victory where their batting depth was put to the test will significantly benefit them in the future.

Yastika Bhatia and Harmanpreet Kaur laid the foundation for MI’s pursuit

One of the primary reasons Mumbai Indians chose to chase was the expected dew that could make batting more favorable. Yastika Bhatia made a strong start in the pursuit of 172 runs, ensuring Mumbai didn’t suffer much from the early losses of star batters Hayley Matthews (0) and Nat Sciver-Brunt (19) during the powerplay.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur partnered with Yastika, contributing to a 56-run stand for the third wicket, which solidified Mumbai’s pursuit. After Yastika’s dismissal at a commendable 57 off 45 balls, Harmanpreet took charge and brought her team close to victory.

The situation seemed bleak for Mumbai Indians after Harmanpreet’s departure at 55, but S Sajana, highly regarded, demonstrated her skills with a last-ball six. This marked Mumbai’s sixth consecutive victory in chases, and they haven’t faced a defeat in any WPL game when given a target by the opposition.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made headlines with its remarkable financial success during the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) in 2023.

The BCCI’s treasurer, Ashish Shelar, presented a financial report during the Annual General Meeting in Goa, revealing that the cricketing authority earned a staggering revenue of Rs 377.49 crores from the WPL.

The Women’s Premier League, held from March 4 to March 26, 2023, took place in Mumbai at two prestigious venues.

It marked a significant milestone in Indian women’s cricket, showcasing the immense talent and potential in the women’s game. The success of the league was not only measured in terms of the quality of cricket but also in its financial impact.

Analyzing the income distribution for the 2022-23 financial year, Shelar’s report sheds light on the pivotal role the WPL played in bolstering the BCCI’s finances.

The Rs 377.49 crores generated from the WPL accounted for a substantial portion of the board’s total income during this period. This impressive figure underscores the growing popularity and commercial viability of women’s cricket in India.

Furthermore, it is noteworthy that the WPL’s contribution to the BCCI’s income represents a significant step towards gender equality in Indian cricket.

It demonstrates that women’s cricket can be a lucrative venture, attracting sponsors, broadcasters, and fans alike. This financial success sends a powerful message, encouraging further investment in women’s cricket and inspiring young talent to pursue careers in the sport.

In addition to the WPL’s success, the Indian Premier League (IPL) continued to be a major revenue driver for the BCCI, constituting 37% of the board’s income for the 2022-23 financial year.

The IPL’s enduring popularity and global reach have made it a financial juggernaut, contributing significantly to the development of Indian cricket at all levels.

In conclusion, the BCCI’s revenue of Rs 377.49 crores from the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League is a testament to the growing prominence of women’s cricket in India.

It not only bolsters the financial health of the board but also signals a promising future for women’s cricket in the country. With continued support and investment, the women’s game is poised to achieve even greater success in the years to come.

The inaugural WPL appears to be having a similar impact to the IPL in terms of providing opportunities for women’s cricket players to play and earn money.

Jasia Akhtar, a cricket player from Kashmir, was ecstatic when Delhi Capitals (DC) purchased her for Rs. 20 lakhs at the Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction prior to the league’s debut in March.

Akhtar had hoped to make an impact with her power-hitting skills under the direction of Australia’s Meg Lanning. Akhtar was devastated even though DC advanced to the final.

Spurt in women’s T20 leagues all over India thanks to WPL

She was named Player-of-the-Match and Player-of-the-Series. After smashing two impressive centuries against Venture XI. And MCC Estilo Legends in the championship game.

”Although there is competition and it would be great if we could get other platforms. Our goal is to play for India. The Women’s Dhaka Premier League is coming up soon. And I’m excited about that as well”, said Akhtar.

The Goan pacer Shikha Pandey participated in the GWPL. Which attracted more than 100 cricketers from all over India. The Venture XI was led by Baroda’s star all-arounder Tarrunam Pathan.

Due to a conflict with the inter-zonal, she had to skip the inaugural Baroda T20 Women’s Challenge. Which was held right before the WPL.

Minnu Mani, a 23-year-old star player from Kerala who was purchased by DC for $30 lakh. And was chosen to play in the WPL. Mani participated in the first T20 women’s league that the KSCA organized a few years back while playing for the Falcon XI.

The most widely played women’s cricket format is now 20-over cricket. Only white-ball competitions are organized by the BCCI. T20 women’s leagues in India are a trend that was started by KSCA. Having this platform is such an advantage for women.

This will be the fourth season of the league and KCA intends to host another T20 league in the following year. The standard of women’s soccer in India will rise, according to Mani, a tribal from Kerala’s Wayanad district, thanks to expanding domestic leagues and the WPL.

Additionally, the Uttar Pradesh association has begun a neighbourhood league. Which will run from May 19 to May 24.

The Women’s Premier League (WPL), which just finished its inaugural season last month, may have a Diwali window, according to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The IPL may conflict with domestic international matches during its festival season, but the BCCI prefers a gap between the IPL and WPL.

The IPL had begun five days after the WPL on March 26 of this year had ended. The IPL’s home and away format, which was unable to be held this year due to lack of time, will also be introduced by the BCCI.

According to Jay Shah on Friday, “We are considering the possibility of scheduling the WPL, in the home-and-away format, in the Diwali window; not two seasons in a year, but simply a different time window.”

Because the BCCI thinks there is a loyal audience for women’s cricket, the home and away format has been introduced for the five-team WPL.

The BCCI secretary further stated, in an interview with journalists on Friday (April 14), “Women’s cricket now has a dedicated audience base and this number will only keep growing as we hope for a positive response with great enthusiasm at the next WPL.”

WPL 2023 was a successful tournament

He claimed that with a total audience reach of 50.78 million, the first iteration of the WPL was a great success. With a TVR of 0.41 and a 15-person audience across all of India, the RCB vs. MI match was the most watched game.

Using data from BARC, Shah revealed that the Gujarat Giants vs. RCB game had received 0.4 TVR, making it the second-most watched game.

Shreyanka Patil and Kanika Ahuja (both of Royal Challengers Bangalore) are two examples of uncapped domestic athletes who have made their debuts in the WPL.

The Mumbai Indians Jintimani Kalita and Saika Ishaque also attracted attention with their steady performances. Given the continued upward trend that women’s cricket in India is experiencing, Shah said, “The WPL 2023 bears testimony to BCCI’s capability to pull off a first-of-its-kind event.”

The inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) came to an end as Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals by 7 wickets in the finals played at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai on 26 March 2023.

It was a memorable tournament for all 5 teams including Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, UP Warriorz, Royal Challengers Bangalore, and Gujarat Giants. The WPL saw some young Indian talent showcase their skills against the world’s best international and Indian players.

There were some decent performances that stood out and could be selected for the Indian national team in the shortest format.

Here we look at the 3 youngsters who could get a chance in Indian Team after having a great WPL:

  1. Saika Ishaque

The left-arm spin bowler played a key role in helping Mumbai Indians win the WPL title. She produced magical spells in the tournament with wickets early and not allowing the opposing batters to hit big shots. She was bought by the Mumbai Indians franchise in the auction for Rs 10 Lakhs.

Ishaque bowled with great control picking 15 wickets from 10 matches ( 10 innings) at an economy of 7 runs per over. She registered the best figures of 4 for 11 in the tournament and proved very tough to face.

Despite not picking wickets in the finals against Delhi Capitals, Ishqaue gave away just 28 runs in her 4 overs. With her accuracy and ability to put pressure on the opponent batters, Saika could be drafted into the T20I squad keeping in the mind World Cup to be played in 2024.

Saika Ishaque

  1. Kanika Ahuja

Kanika Ahuja looked impressive with her shot-making style to put opponent bowlers under pressure. She was bought by Royal Challengers Bangalore franchise for Rs 35 Lakhs during the auction.

Ahuja had a decent outing in the tournament with 98 runs from 7 matches with a strike rate of 132.43. She delivered a match-winning knock against UPW Warriorz scoring 46 runs in a quick time helping Royal Challengers Bangalore register its first win of the tournament.

For her match-winning knock, Kanika Ahuja was named the player of the match. Kanika Ahuja could be given a chance as she can hit big shots and make life tough for the opponent bowlers with her innovative shots.

  1. Parshavi Chopra

The Under 19 T20 Cup winner Parshavi Chopra was bought by UP Warriorz side for Rs 10 Lakhs. She looked impressive in the 4 matches she played in this tournament.

She looked impressive in the match against Gujarat Giants picking up wickets of Dayalan Hemalatha and then Ash Gardner. Despite going for runs, Chopra deceived the batters with variations and not allowed them to score runs.

Chopra went at an economy rate of 8.16 runs per over but could be an asset for the Indian national team as Poonam Yadav has been struggling for form and is not a part of the squad.

The Australian wicketkeeper Alyssa Healy has been named as the captain of the UP Warriorz side for the inaugural Women’s Premier League 2023 starting from 4 March onwards.

She was bought for Rs 70 Lakhs by Capri Global Holdings Private Limited-owned franchise. UP Warriorz has a well-balanced side put during the WPL auctions on February 13. She is looking impressive in the ongoing ICC T20 Women’s World Cup.

Australia qualified for the semi-finals of the tournament without losing any matches in the league stage. Healy is currently the third leading run-getter with 146 runs from 3 matches besides Smriti Mandhana and Nat Sciver Brunt. She did not feature in the last league match against South Africa due to precautionary suffered to her calf. Healy would be hoping to be fit for the semi-finals against the Indian team on 23 February in Cape Town.

UP Warriorz has a well-rounded unit with the likes of Sophie Ecclestone for Rs 1.80 Crore, Deepti Sharma, 2.60 Crore, Tahila McGrath for 1.40 Crore, Shabnim Ismail for 1 Crore, Anjali Sarvani 55 Lakhs, Rajeshwari Gayakwad 40 Lakhs, Parasvhi Chopra 10 Lakhs, Shweta Seharwat 40 Lakhs, Soppadhandi Yashashri 10 Lakhs, Kiran Navgire 30 Lakhs, Grace Harris 75 Lakhs, Devika Vaidya 1.40 Crore, Lauren Bell 30 Lakhs, Laxmi Yadav 10 Lakhs and Simran Sheikh 10 Lakhs.

A total of 12 Crore Rs has been spent with 16 players in the squad. The tournament will be played in two venues in Mumbai, CCI Brabourne Stadium, and DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai. UP Warriorz would start their tournament against Gujarat Giants on 5 March at DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai.

“The WPL is a tournament we have all been keenly waiting on, and the UP Warriorz has a fantastic squad, waiting to make a splash once things get going,” Healy said in a statement issued by Warriorz. “We have a good mix of experience and youth along with the ability and look forward to putting on a show for our fans. We are here to win and be ruthless in our brand of cricket.”

Alyssa Healy’s record in T20I format

Alyssa Healy has been a part of the Australian team that won T20 World Cups on five occasions including 2010, 2012, 2014, 2018, and 2020. In the absence of regular captain Meg Lanning, Healy took the charge during the T20I series against India in India last year.

Healy has been an aggressive opener proving her worth. She has played 148 T20I matches ( 139 innings) with 2446 runs at a strike rate of 127.72. The opener achieved the highest unbeaten 148.
