Tamil Nadu Premier League To Be Cancelled Due To COVID-19

TNPL BCCI

The rising cases of COVID-19 in India earlier this year brought cricket to a standstill. It led to postponing the IPL and many other series all over the world. More bad news awaits for the fans as the 5th season of the Tamil Nadu Premier League is most probably set to be cancelled.

This year’s edition was supposed to be played between June 10 to July 12 but had to postpone owing to the rising cases in Tamil Nadu. As of today, Tamil Nadu is the 2nd most-affected state after Maharashtra with over 58000 active cases. Maharashtra leads with over 150,000 cases all over the state.

Tamil Nadu Premier League to be called off

The TNCA official earlier told ESPNcricinfo that they’re looking at August-September window. But with the IPL schedule to play in September in the UAE, the organisers are likely to call it off. Many senior cricketers will be a part of IPL and thus, will not be a part of the TNPL.

“We were initially looking at an August-September window, but it looks unlikely now. There seems to be no window to host the tournament, but we will take the final decision in the next couple of weeks,” ESPNcricinfo quoted a TNCA official as saying.

Post the IPL, the BCCI is planning to host a shortened domestic season for this year so again TNPL will end up finding no empty window for the league. We’re most likely to see it next year since there is no available window for the league to go ahead.

“The IPL is going to happen now and after the players may return from the IPL, the Ranji Trophy season may begin, so there is no window,” said the TNPL official.

As of now, the Chepauk Super Gillies are the defending champions beating Dindigul Dragons in the finals last year.
