K. Annamalai, the vice president of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu, commended South Africa for their energetic display in the ICC Women’s World Cup. The Proteas were the runners-up on Sunday when they were defeated by Harmanpreet Kaur’s India, who scored 52 runs, at the Dr DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai in front of a large audience.

South Africa first opted to bowl and managed to limit India to 298 for seven before getting out for 246 in 45.3 overs. Annamalai said that sometimes sports can be very cruel, as there are hardly any differences dividing two champion teams.

Sports can sometimes be cruel: K Annamalai praises South Africa

K. Annamalai, the vice-president of the BJP in Tamil Nadu, congratulated South Africa for their persistence and attitude in the ICC Women’s World Cup, branding their final drive a champion’s battle. Furthermore, he commended the captain Laura Wolvaardt for her performance, which set a new record for runs scored.

“Sports can sometimes be very cruel, as there can only be one winner. Very little separates champions at the top level – an edge that’s thinner than a hard one, a dropped chance, advantage of winning a toss & many other things,” Annamalai wrote on X.

“What the SA women’s team accomplished after entering into professional cricket at the top level – 12 years ago – is pretty special.”

“Two continuous T20 World Cup finals before this tournament, bouncing back from two scores below 100 in this World Cup, marching into the final after their majestic semifinal against England – these are rarified zones only champions dare to enter,” Annamalai wrote.

“Throughout this journey, one cricketer stood like a champion and that’s their captain, Laura Wolvaardt. Getting two centuries on the trot in the semifinals and finals, scoring record runs in this World Cup and still seeing the game with a perspective that many lose at the time of winning and more so at the time of losing, for me, tops everything she has & will accomplish! Many congratulations on a great World Cup,” Annamalai added.

South Africa’s first match of the tournament resulted in a crushing 10-wicket loss against England, but they dramatically turned things around to get through to the semi-finals. There, they took revenge for their previous defeat by beating England by 125 runs and then bravely losing in the final.
