The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has named veteran pacer Mohammed Shami as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2022. Bumrah has been ruled out of the showpiece T20 event with an injury.

Incidentally, Bumrah was ruled out of the showpiece T20 event due to a back stress fracture. Shami and Deepak Chahar were initially part of the reserves but with the latter now ruled out, Mohammed Siraj and Deepak Chahar joined the Bengal pacer in the race for Bumrah’s replacement.

However, Mohammed Shami, who recently recovered from COVID-19, has left everyone behind to replace Jasprit Bumrah in India’s T20 World Cup squad. He has already travelled to Australia and has joined the rest of the squad.

“The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Mohammed Shami as Jasprit Bumrah’s replacement in India’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad. Shami has reached Australia and will link up with the squad in Brisbane ahead of the warm-up matches,” BCCI said in a statement.

Mohammed Shami last played an international T20 game in the T20 World Cup last year in the UAE. However, he had a spectacular campaign in IPL 2022, leading the Gujarat Titans’ bowling unit.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur have been named as backups and will travel to Australia shortly. Both had excellent outings in the recently concluded series against South Africa and were rewarded for their good work.

India squad for ICC T20 World Cup: Rohit Sharma (Captain), KL Rahul (vice-captain), Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Deepak Hooda, Rishabh Pant (wicket-keeper), Dinesh Karthik (wicket-keeper), Hardik Pandya, R. Ashwin, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Shami.

India will play a couple of warm-up games before their first T20 World Cup game against Pakistan at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on October 23.
